They want to return the old learning system, which is the Face-to-Face

education, which means they are highly affected because of the workload given
to them due to the new learning modalities.
2. City living or province life
My Mom has always been restraint when I tell her that I want to live in the

she lived in a Tarlac City which is a city with the same name, and her experience
was chaotic, that’s why she only prefers a simple and humble life in the province.
3. Vaccination or not
Ever since the vaccination trials started last year, their decision was firm
that they would not wish to get administered with a vaccine against COVID-19,
unless there are certain social restrictions that would interfere with their daily

had remained in their memories, that’s why they’re hesitant to get vaccinated.

READING ACTIVITY 1
Philippine Network That Clashed With Duterte Ends Local Coverage

By Jason Gutierrez

Published Aug. 28, 2020

Updated Dec. 15, 2020

MANILA — A major Philippine news network that recently lost its broadcast license
closed a dozen regional news operations on Friday, in what advocates called the latest
blow to the country’s independent press.
The network, ABS-CBN, which President Rodrigo Duterte has frequently accused of
bias, said it could not afford to keep the local newsrooms going. Lawmakers in the
House of Representatives, which is largely controlled by allies of Mr. Duterte, voted in
July not to renew the network’s broadcast franchise; its main channels had already
been pulled off the air in May, when its license expired.
But the network’s cable operation remained intact, because it is run by a different unit
within ABS-CBN. And until Friday, its regional news teams kept providing coverage for
local and national audiences, which viewers could still watch on cable and the internet.

The underlined sentence in the passage above, presents bias through statistics
and crown counts with a slight hint of bias through word choice and tone. Obviously, it is
another form of Gatekeeping (media bias). In reality, we don’t know the exact number of
allies President Rodrigo Duterte has inside the congress. None of them claimed that
they did it for the glory of the president. Furthermore, the author did not state that there
were congressmen who also voted to renew the franchise of the said network. It has
filtered information and did not give exact facts.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

A. hiwd

What is bias? What is prejudice?

Bias is utterly just a person’s distinct Prejudice was from the Latin words prae,
predisposition of how he views the world. which means “in advance” and judicium,
A bias can either be given on a positive which means “judgement”, prejudice
not to favor or to be against on a negative means preconceived judgement or
note. There are different forms of biases opinion. It’s an irrational attitude towards
such as status quo, favoritism, victim a certain individual, group, race, or their
blaming, gatekeeping and supposed characteristics. It is like an
sensationalism. Of course, bias can also instinct on the person based on what
be seen on the news, through selection, you’ve perceived. It is your initial insight
omission, placement, word choice or on someone or something based on what
tone, photos, captions and camera you initially know about them. There are
angles, statistics and crown counts, use also forms of prejudice such as ageism,
of names and titles and source of control. classicism, lookism, racism and sexism.
B.

Biases and Prejudices

In our daily lives, we subconsciously make prejudices along with biases. Our
feelings are always crucial in decision making. What we can reach using our five senses
affects our daily decisions. Advertisements, recommendations, propagandas, and such
that makes an impact on our decisions lead us to making biases and prejudices.
The news is always alive, we all have our own stand on everything that is
presented on the daily broadcast. Either we agree to it or we are against it. We have our
own preferences in everything.
When reading such articles that has clashing ideas, it is important to detect these
biases in prejudices. In speeches that we hear, we must determine the present biases
that is given in the said speech. This is to prevent us from making our own prejudices
regarding information that we don’t profoundly know about. For us to refute a biased
claim coming from the author.
Inability to detect and invalidate these biases and prejudices will highly affect the
outcome of the daily decisions we are making. No matter how petty a bias may be, it
can still affect a person’s judgement and might lead him to make a decision out of bias
and prejudice.
Fabrication of fake information spreads online every day. This may ruin a certain
person, group, brand, religious association, and even products. On the contrary, it might
also be in favor of them. It’s an awful advertisement technique, but it goes around the
internet over and over again.
The natives of the United States are the Black Americans. Racism is the kind of
prejudice that happens to them just because of their skin complexion. The privacy of
celebrities are invaded because of the hungry mind of the audiences that want to either
know them or bash them. Sensationalism rubs salt to this wound. Women are criticized
for wearing revealing clothes and get sexually assaulted. That’s where victim blaming
comes in. All of us have our own insecurities and inhibitions, but why do people who
don’t pass the standards for a pretty face gets discriminated? That’s because of
lookism.
The aforementioned are just some examples of the results of bias and
prejudices, and look how chaotic it has become. It happens day-to-day and it gets
worse every day.
But I must say that voting out of bias and prejudice in the National Elections next
year will lead the citizens to a long remorse and regret. In a democratic country like the
Philippines, the people have the power to choose the leaders for their beloved
homeland. And failure to elect the righteous leader to serve for three years or more will
lead our country to havoc.
This is why I highly suggest for each and every one of us to be hawk-eyed in
everything we read and to be an intense audience in everything we hear. Because our
judgement is easily influenced, we must learn to invalidate the lies being fed by people
who only spat falsehood and hypocrisy.
Aniekee Tochukwu once said, “Having sentiments make you susceptible to lies
and misjudgment.” And we must not be those people. We must never be those people.
WHAT I CAN DO
A. wdy
Alkon exhibited biases in the forms of media bias and sensationalism. The words
she used to write her stand on feminism were provocative. She only stated the facts that
news platforms say about women empowerment. Alkon should’ve listed the
encouraging words said to men by these journalists. She only selected the positive
words of feminists for women. The author omitted the praises to men. This is blunt
sexism, which is a type of prejudice.
Lines and phrases that she used such as ‘urging women to bow out the beauty
of arms race and “Learn to Love that woman in the mirror,” nobody gets into the
ridiculous position to “Learn to love that unemployed guy sprawled on the couch!”’,
‘because road empowerment… is looking just like a hairy old man?’ clearly shows her
biases and prejudices for the feminists.
