Futsal is an association football game played on a hard court, smaller than a
football pitch, and mainly indoors. It has similarities to five-a-side football.
Invented in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930 —in the midst of the fervor left by
1st FIFA World Cup— by the gym teacher Juan Carlos, Futsal rapidly reached
worldwide popularity. Futsal is played between two teams of five players each,
one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike
some other forms of indoor soccer, the game is played on a hard court surface
marked by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is played with a smaller,
harder, low-bounce ball than soccer. The surface, ball and rules together favor
ball control and passing in small spaces. The game's emphasis is "on
improvisation, creativity and technique."
Invented in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930 —in the midst of the

Ceriani, writing the rule book, took as examples the principles
of association football (the possibility to touch the ball with every

rules about the goalkeeper; from team handball for the field and

Futsal is a contact sport and a five-a-side variant of association football. It is played on a smaller
field which is usually indoors. The term futsal comes from the Portuguese 'futebol de salao' which
means hall football. Futsal is becoming very popular and people of all ages take part it in. The
worlds’ sports governing body, Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), officially
recognizes futsal as indoor football. Playing the futsal game is both entertaining and recreational.
Futsal (Five-a-Side Soccer) is “The Way the World Plays Indoor Soccer” and is the international form
of indoor soccer approved by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). It is played
in all continents of the world by over 100 countries with 12 million players.
