3.1 Safety Reminder

For all its potential, ECDIS is the only computer software running on a specific PC with suitable
endurance for marine use. As a result, it suffers from all the faults and errors of any computer. The
greatest single danger from ECDIS is to assume that it has been correctly configured with
regard to the Route, Safety Depth, Safety Contour, Alarms and Displayed Data. A ship can
ground just as easily as a consequence of improper configuration as it could from sloppy chartwork
on a paper chart.
The present recommendations that form the basis of the bridge check-off cards. The following topics
are covered:
Configuration for pilotage and confined waters.

display settings for pilotage and confined waters.

configuration for coastal navigation and open ocean.

display settings for coastal navigation and open ocean.

Where the ECDIS in use supports it, display configurations should be saved so that the system can be
set up quickly when transiting between different environments such as Confined Waters, Anchoring,
Coastal Navigation and Open Ocean. This will save time when setting up the system.

3.2 Recommended configuration for pilotage and confined waters

Terminology and functions mentioned below are not exhaustive and will vary dependent upon the
system in use:

3.2.1 Time
Check that System Time is configured correctly
Check that Ship's Time is correct in the ECDIS
Check that the correct Time Zone settings are applied.

3.2.2 Position Source Setup

Check that the primary position fixing system is set up correctly
Check that ECDIS is correct by inputting a manual fix in the system
Select the best available sensor as the Primary Position Source according to Passage Plan.
Select the best available Secondary Position Source according to Passage Plan.
Check Heading reading with ECDIS readout.
Check Log reading with ECDIS readout.
Set SOG as speed source.
Confirm that RIO is available and prove ECDIS correct.

3.8 Settings of ECDIS Safety Parameters

Subject to the draught and specifications of the individual ship and the master’s approval, standard
Safety Depth and Safety Contour may normally be applied for Ocean/Coastal Navigation. The
following matrix contains recommendations for ECDIS Safety Parameters settings, with reference to
the navigational circumstances and should be considered for reference when determining the actual

Section 3
M/V TRINITY ECDIS Operations & Procedures Plan Setting ECDIS Safety
IMO 9545716 Parameters

a. The Safety Depth: It shall always be in line with the minimum required UKC as calculated in
the Passage Plan and further corrected for safety as per the CATZOC and Height of Tide (for
Restricted Waters).
b. The Safety Contour: It shall always be set equal or greater than the Safety Depth and in
general it follows the rule below:
(Max Draught + Squat) x 1.5 in open waters
(Max Draught + Squat) x 1.1 in pilotage waters
As a more specific guidance the following values are recommended as a minimum:

1. Vessels with draughts of 6m ~ 10m: a standard Safety Contour of 20 m.

2. Vessels with draughts of 10m ~ 20m: a standard Safety Contour of 30 m.

3. Vessels with draughts of 20m ~ 30m: a standard Safety Contour of 50 m.

The Shallow Contour: must be the Dynamic Draught which is the max Static Draught + Squat at the
max predicted speed. The Deep Contour: Greater value from safety contour whichever exists in the
ENC chart. The Safety Height: It must the Air Draft plus the Overhead Clearance (according to the
company’s established policy).
XTE: As per matrix above.

For Open Seas (Areas where chart datum is twice the static draught) - Four color shades is
recommended to be used. For Restricted waters (Areas where chart datum is less than twice the
static draught) - Two-color depth must be used.

In the case of a coastline with gently shoaling depths, the recommendations above would restrict a
vessel's safe water significantly. Therefore, this is area-dependent and needs consideration
appropriate to the intended route. In the above context, the Safety Contour shall be set equally to
Safety Depth (if same contour is available) or more than the Safety Depth, at the next (higher level /
deeper value) contour available in the ENC chart.

The area of Safety Contour is light blue and NOT safe for navigation.

The contours on an ENC are normally based on those which are depicted on the corresponding paper
chart. If the selected value is not available, then the next deeper contour is selected which may
artificially reduce the amount of safe water shown on the chart. Due to this constraint, special care
should be taken, as it is highly likely in certain legs within the Passage Plan the vessel will need to
navigate in waters inside the highlighted safety contour.
