Where the ECDIS in use supports it, display configurations should be saved so that the system can be
set up quickly when transiting between different environments such as Confined Waters, Anchoring,
Coastal Navigation and Open Ocean. This will save time when setting up the system.
3.2.1 Time
Check that System Time is configured correctly
Check that Ship's Time is correct in the ECDIS
Check that the correct Time Zone settings are applied.
3.2.8 Routes
Ensure that the correct Route is loaded for Route Monitoring
Check that XTD has been set to Port/Starboard 0.2/0.2nm or extended if the Master deems
so. Under extreme conditions can be reduced to Port/ Starboard 0.1/0.1nm
Set up ETA
Set up ETD
Confirm that the Route has been checked.
Protect the Route.
Activate the Route for Monitoring.
Load the Secondary Route in Route Editor if required.
3.2.10 Overlays
Ensure that all relevant Overlays are loaded.
Check that the following Overlays are loaded and configured:
Manual Corrections (load filename as appropriate)
Additional Information (load filename as appropriate)
3.2.17 Targets
Ensure that targets are configured correctly.
Check that the following are configured correctly:
ARPA Contacts On, Vectors On, Tracks Off
AIS Contacts On, Vectors On, Tracks Off
CPA Alarm (In accordance with Company’s policy or extended if the Master deems so)
TCPA Alarm (In accordance with Company’s policy or extended if the Master deems so)
3.2.18 Radar
Ensure that the preferred radar is selected.
Check that RIO and ARPA targets can be displayed.

a. The Safety Depth: It shall always be in line with the minimum required UKC as calculated in
the Passage Plan and further corrected for safety as per the CATZOC and Height of Tide (for
Restricted Waters).
b. The Safety Contour: It shall always be set equal or greater than the Safety Depth and in
general it follows the rule below:
(Max Draught + Squat) x 1.5 in open waters
(Max Draught + Squat) x 1.1 in pilotage waters
As a more specific guidance the following values are recommended as a minimum:
The Shallow Contour: must be the Dynamic Draught which is the max Static Draught + Squat at the
max predicted speed. The Deep Contour: Greater value from safety contour whichever exists in the
ENC chart. The Safety Height: It must the Air Draft plus the Overhead Clearance (according to the
company’s established policy).
XTE: As per matrix above.
For Open Seas (Areas where chart datum is twice the static draught) - Four color shades is
recommended to be used. For Restricted waters (Areas where chart datum is less than twice the
static draught) - Two-color depth must be used.
In the case of a coastline with gently shoaling depths, the recommendations above would restrict a
vessel's safe water significantly. Therefore, this is area-dependent and needs consideration
appropriate to the intended route. In the above context, the Safety Contour shall be set equally to
Safety Depth (if same contour is available) or more than the Safety Depth, at the next (higher level /
deeper value) contour available in the ENC chart.
The area of Safety Contour is light blue and NOT safe for navigation.
The contours on an ENC are normally based on those which are depicted on the corresponding paper
chart. If the selected value is not available, then the next deeper contour is selected which may
artificially reduce the amount of safe water shown on the chart. Due to this constraint, special care
should be taken, as it is highly likely in certain legs within the Passage Plan the vessel will need to
navigate in waters inside the highlighted safety contour.
