Identify the comparative form of each adjective:
DEMONSTRTIVE ADJECTIVES

A demonstrative adjective is a special adjective (often called a

determiner) that identifies a noun or pronoun by expressing its

position as near or far (including in time).

The demonstrative adjectives are 'this,' 'that,' 'these,' and

'those.'
A demonstrative adjective always comes first in the noun

phase (e.g., "this big dog", "that ugly one in the corner").

7
Identify the comparative form of each adjective:

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM

"This" and "that" modify singular nouns.

"These" and "those" modify plural nouns.
"This" and "these" tell us the thing being modified is near (in

time or space), while "that" and "those" tell us the thing is

farther away.

7
Remember that demonstrative adjectives can tell us about the position of

something in time too.

· I will remember this day forever.

("This" tells us the day is near; i.e., today.)
· Those decisions were tough.
("Those" tells us the decisions were in the past; i.e., not the decisions being

made right now.)

(Do not confuse demonstrative adjectives with demonstrative pronouns.

8
You use demonstratives "one" or "ones" instead of a noun that has already

been mentioned or is known in the situation, usually when you are adding

information or contrasting two things of the same kind.

One is a pronoun used to replace a singular countable noun, so as to avoid

unnecessary repetition.
- I've bought these two lipsticks.
- I like both but the purple one is gorgeous.

However, we will use ones to replace plural countable nouns

- Whose are these socks?

- The big ones are mine.

HOW MUCH AND WHICH

How much can be used when we want to know the PRICE of

something.
In this case, we can use How much with countable nouns (both

singular and plural nouns). The answer to these questions will always be a price:
We use the verb to be or to cost.
Example Answers:
· How much is the sweater?
● How much is that painting? · $20
· How much is a pint of beer?
● How much are those shoes? · $2.50
● How much did your jacket cost?
● How much is the dress on display in the window?
● How much will it cost me?
● How much does it cost?
9
Comparison with PREFER/LIKE
We use prefer or like to say we like one thing or activity more than

another.
EXAMPLES:
Which shoes do you prefer?
- I prefer the blue ones.
Which book do you like?
- I like the adventure one.

9
COMPARISON WITH ADJECTIVES

A comparative adjective compares differences between two nouns.

For example, “The blue car is cheaper than the red car”.

Comparatives take the following forms:

● the adj+er: in most cases, adjectives with 1 or 2 syllables take the “er” form

(e.g. fast – faster / heavy – heavier)

● the more + adj: in most cases, adjectives with 3 or more syllables take the

“more ~” form (e.g. expensive – more expensive / beautiful – more beautiful)

● there are a few exceptions to the above rule (e.g. modern – more modern)
● irregular forms: “good” and “bad” take the irregular forms “better” / “worse”
