The Psychological Testing and Guidance Center (PTGC) were created
directly under the Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs in August
1986. Its main concern focused on the development of the admission instruments
for the college and high school levels. The following year it expanded its services
by catering to the psychological testing needs of the students and the guidance
and counseling program of the University were implemented through it. From
1988 and onward, psychological testing services has been extended to faculty
and employees as well as CMU job applicants and those referred to by outside
agencies.
In the previous years, the PTGC is involved in the recruitment and
administration of the college entrance examination, together with the high school
entrance examination. However, with the creation of a testing committee last
2002 in pursuant of creating an admission office, assisting the university. in
selecting the poor and qualified/ deserving individuals in the university was no
longer part of the unit’s objective. PTGC focuses on counseling, psychological
testing, information and training services with the aim of establishing closer

In the year 2015, pursuant to the revision of the CMU Code Psychological
Testing and Guidance Center (PTGC) was under the Office of Student Affairs

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Despite of the short period of training due to this pandemic, the student
trainees still gained more knowledge and skills in the preparation of the real
working environment in this _______ Internship program. Student trainees did
experience mixed emotions as to the excitement about the work field and a little
anxious towards the expectations of the people around them.
In the month of January, the intern-students organized an event during the
Opening and Blessing Ceremony of the new Guidance and Counseling Center
office held last January 24, 2020. This event made the trainees enhance their
initiative, creativity and also develop good teamwork with co-trainees. As overall
job the trainees are the event organizers.
The trainees was able to join the first meeting of the office this year in the
preparation for the Feb Fest since the Office of the Guidance and Counseling
Center is in partnership with the Supreme Student Council wherein the trainees
was able to give their ideas in possible activities.
Last February 24, 2020 Guidance and Counseling Center conducted a big
event. This event was seminar about Relationship and Resiliency, a seminar for
all the student from the CMULHS, CMU-SHS and selected students from the
CWTS. This event catered almost 4,000 participants. The trainees learned how
to handle this crowd and to do initiative work, creativity and again the trainee
become flexible since they are also one of the performers during the event. From
the preparation of certificates, invitations, attendance, plaques of the speakers
and the stage decoration, this resulted to a successful and job well done to the
trainees.
During the ISO accreditation, the trainees also contributed for complying
all the files and documents needed and that tested the authors strength and
working under pressure. The best thing about this tasked was the Office of the
Student Affairs was the first office who submitted the requirement on the given
time.
9
The trainees were also assigned on different specializations. One for the
Infographics, one for the Testing and one for the Customer Service Satisfaction
Survey via Google forms.
For the Infographics, the trainees was able to create an output to be used
in the office for the Values of the week. Here, the trainees was able to show their
skills in editing and creativity. And at the same time their time management since
this tasked was only given for a short period of time.
For the testing, it is one of the GCC’s offered services to CMU Students.
Here, the trainees are tested how fast and skilled they are in using Microsoft
excel. This is also an opportunity for the trainees for development in using excel.
For the Customer Service Satisfaction Survey, it should be used in the
GCC’s research paper but due to the pandemic the trainees was not able to do
the research. They only thing they presented are the survey questions through
the use of Google Forms.
The trainees was also aware and oriented with the data privacy of the
office since the Guidance and Counseling Center is one of the office who
gathered some personal data from the students and some private clients. So as
an intern, trainees was able to sign a data privacy statement. This is a practice
for the trainees to privacy and loyalty to the company they will be working on
someday.
The trainees was also exposed to filing system. Here, the trainees was
able to show their learnings in document filing. In every document filer the
trainees do beautification, do the ear tagging and inserting separator together
with the table of content so that when looking for a document it would be easy to
find it. The trainees also do the labelling of each document filers and cabinets
with proper coding. This training gives knowledge to the trainees about ISO
accreditation.
The supervisor trusted the trainees so much on planning especially in
conducting events. The trainees presented to their supervisor a plan A, plan B,
plan C and plan D since the trainees are not sure if Plan A is suited to that event.
Each plans depends on every situations. Receiving a positive feedbacks from the
10
OSA Director and from their supervisor, the authors believed that they are really
hands on in every tasked and the authors are now equipped and well trained for
their future careers. Independence really developed to the trainees since their
supervisor let them do the job for their own with a little guidance.
The authors learned so much on their almost three months of training
under the supervision of Mrs. Mary Grace B. Pacatang. The trainees learned so
much on improving themselves in different field of experiences.
11
STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES, OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS
IN THE CONDUCT OF THE SUPERVISED FIELD EXPERIENCE
PROGRAM
These are the summary of the SWOT analysis during the internship at the
Guidance and Counseling Center that helped the student trainee to identify the
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the Supervised Field
Experience Training Program.
12
PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
The trainees should work with what the supervisor has given to them.
Some days, there is no work assigned to the trainees. They are doing some work
on their own and still not being appreciated by other personnel. They work
independently, being initiative at work but others do not see it as a good
performance at all, and that is clearly discouraging on the trainee’s part.
Some personnel tend to not welcome the trainees in the office wherein it
also affect the trainee’s confidence to do their job. It is a guidance and
counseling center wherein students also need to be welcomed and not feel any
tension in the office. Indeed, the authors should practice professionalism in the
workplace.
Due to this pandemic, the student trainees did not reach up to 400-hour
requirement of the internship program so they experienced limited time to finish
some paper works still needed in the office.
The authors experienced difficulty of complying requirements as to the
materials needed such as laptop and SFE manual were in the boarding house,
since all students were sent to their respective hometowns unexpectedly. As the
result, the group had a hard time communicating with each other online about the
plans for the narrative report due to poor internet connection.
After all, these concerns become the basis to strengthen and improve the
individual as to what real working environment is.
13
LESSONS LEARNED
For almost three months being the student trainees in Guidance and
Counseling Center, they learned and applied so much knowledge and skills
throughout the working field. The authors learned how to manage time during
SFE and class schedule and use time in a way to improve their selves. They
were exposed to the actual work that made them become more sociable and
boost their self-confidence.
As trainees, conflicts in the office are inescapable and that they know how
to handle and react in the situation in a professional way. Throughout the
training, the author knows how to extend their patience and how to adjust with
the people around them. Indeed, you cannot choose the people you will be
working with; instead you can choose how to react on it.
The authors learned that being an organizer is also being flexible. They
learned that you must know every part of the work and not just focus on one
direction only. They learned how to face the crowd and face their fears as they
thought they cannot make it, but they did. They learned that it is important to try
than saying NO and thinking you cannot do a certain task. Limiting self-capability
is like losing an opportunity.
The authors also learned how to deal and work with each other. They
learned that communication and interaction is very important in the workplace to
develop good relationship with all the personnel and to learn something from
them. The supervisor was very approachable and always available for the
trainees’ questions and concerns and so is willing to share ideas as mentors.
The authors learned that talent alone is not enough. One must also have
initiative, self-discipline and to show your best. Knowing how to handle and tackle
different issues and still diplomatic in both action and word is important.
The authors learned that the Supervised Field Experience program is not
just a requirement to college students and not just to pass the course, but it is
also an experience to be molded to become young professionals in the future.
14
Lastly, they learned independence. People think being spoon-fed is the
way to learn but working independently has proved to be very important. It helps
the authors to make their own decisions and to do things alone. Being able to
work independently with little guidance is very important in the working world.
15
CONCLUSIONS
Despite the short period of the authors training due to this pandemic, it
was still a very meaningful one. The training widens their knowledge and skills,
their confidence, the way they communicate with other people in the office, and
the way they work independently. It caused a big impact to them as Office
Administration students, wherein they were renewed, molded, and practice good
manners in both actions and words. The training made them realized that in
order to become successful, they must also learn to love what they are doing. As
student trainees, they must learn what they have got in school, be inspire, love
the path they are taking, and do their best heartily in everything that they can in a
positive outlook in mind. This 6 unit subject should not be taken for granted.
