Bagaua Tricia Gender-Socialization

Gender socialization begins at birth and continues through childhood and adolescence. It involves society assigning strict gender roles and expectations to individuals based on their sex. The three main agents of socialization are the family, schools, and media, which teach children how they are expected to behave and what careers are appropriate based on whether they are male or female. This process negatively predetermines roles and limits opportunities for women.

Gender Socialization

Bagaua 2022
Gender socialization begins with the birth of a child. The process of gender
socialization continues with age, reaching its peak when the child reaches the age of
adolescence. It contributes significantly to the unequal treatment of individuals based on
their gender in educational institutions, the workplace, employment opportunities, and
general empowerment.

The central concept of the gender socialization process is society's expectation

of females and males to behave and act differently. Furthermore, due to different
socialization, such a phenomenon tends to treat girls and boys differently. Society
raises the boys to act in the way that males are expected to act. On the same note, the
girls are raised in such a manner as to conform to society’s established role of the
female.

Gender Socialization has three agents. The immediate family is the first
source of influence for a young child. It is a complete world in and of itself, and the child
learns while living in it. The child's family life is not only defined by biological tasks such
as protection from the outside world or feeding, but it also has a significant impact on
the child's development of specific behaviors based on the gender assigned at birth.
The first socialization platform for a child is his or her family. The child develops an
understanding of his or her gender roles. Family members, particularly parents, treat the
child according to her or his gender. The various types of toys that boys and girls are
made to play with are a good example of this. Boys' toys, such as robots and cars,
represent strength and aggression. While the girls are given toys that enhance their
feminine characteristics and ability to nurture, such as dolls or similar items.

As the child grows older, he or she attends school to obtain an education.

However, educational institutions serve as the second agency in influencing these
children to act in accordance with the societal expectations of their gender. Schools
help children develop their character as well as teach them to read and write. They are
taught to cooperate with others and to follow the rules set by society.
Teachers at the school play an important role in setting gender expectations for the
students. They instill the belief that when children mature, they must pursue specific
careers or professions based on their gender.

Children learn from the media, both print and electronic, in addition to their
families and schools. The rapid rise of media over the years has had a significant
impact on children's learning processes. Different genders are represented differently in
television programs. The women are portrayed as emotional and sensitive, whereas the
men are portrayed as strong, aggressive, and supportive of the women. These
programs and advertisements further influence children's behavior.

Gender socialization is now a part of our everyday lives. It is a process in

which individuals are assigned specific gender roles and are expected to strictly adhere
to those roles. It internalizes societal values in order to effectively adapt to individual
cultures. The meaning of the terms male and female is clearly classified in the vast
majority of cultures around the world. This process of categorizing or defining gender
roles results in individuals identifying as girls or boys. Furthermore, these assigned
gender roles are strict in nature, and both genders are expected to behave in
accordance with their assigned genders.

To summarize, gender socialization is a negative phenomenon. It

predetermines the roles that an individual is expected to play based on his or her
gender. Women are the ones who suffer the most as they are not considered equal to
men and are expected to be the nurturing ones. Furthermore, females are put under a
lot of pressure to prove their worth to society, and yet job opportunities for them are very
limited.
