Q1L3 Outline

This document is a lesson about tithing that explores its biblical basis and purpose. It discusses how (1) the tithe belongs to God, as evidenced by its mention as far back as Abraham; (2) the tithe is intended to support the spread of the gospel through ministers; and (3) a faithful tithe is one given according to God's instructions of a tenth of one's income returned to the church in trust of God's provision. The lesson emphasizes how tithing demonstrates faith in God to fulfill His promises.

Managing for the Master

Quarter 1, Lesson 3
“The Tithing Contract”
www.MichiganSSPM.org

MEMORY VERSE: “‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may
be food in My house, and try Me now in this,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘If I
will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such
blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.’” Malachi 3:10, NKJV
LESSON STUDY INTRO
• This week’s lesson explores the Biblical instruction concerning
the tithe.
1. The Tithe is the Lord’s (Sun)
• “…[A]ll the tithe of the land… is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord”
(Lev. 27:30).
o As we have previously studied, everything we “own” actually
belongs to God (Ps. 50:10-12; Ac. 17:24-25).
o However, He only claims a tithe, or tenth, for Himself.
• the words tithe and tenth are used interchangeably (see Heb.
7:4, 6, 8-9).
• While God gives an explicit command in Lev. 27:30, we find
evidence of the practice of tithing much earlier.
o Abraham gave tithes to Melchizedek (Gen. 14:20).
o Jacob pledged tithes to God at Bethel (Gen. 28:20-22).
The tithing system reaches back beyond the days of Moses. Men were
required to offer to God gifts for religious purposes before the definite
system was given to Moses, even as far back as the days of Adam. 3T 393.1 (Qtly,
Sab, par 3)

2. The Tithe is for the spread of the gospel (Mon, Tue)

• God designated the tithe for the support of His ministers (see
Num. 18:21, 24; 1 Cor. 9:9, 13-14).
o In both old and new testaments, the Bible teaches that the tithe is
used to support the work of ministers in spreading the gospel.
o This also gave church members an opportunity to invest in the
cause of Christ.
An American business man… remarked… “All day I am working for Christ.
And at night, while I sleep, I have a man working for Him in China.” In
explanation, He added: “In my youth I determined to go as a missionary to
the heathen. But on the death of my father I had to take up his business
in order to provide for the family. Now, instead of going myself, I support a
missionary. In such a town of such a province of China, my worker is
stationed. And so, even while I sleep, I am, through my representative, still
working for Christ.” ChS 170.4

• This is why God commanded the tithe to be brought to
centralized “storehouses” for distribution (Dt. 12:5-14; Mal.
3:10)
o “…that there may be food in My house” (Mal. 3:10).
• As storehouses were used to store grain for food, so God’s house
– His church – amply provided for through the faithful tithes
of His people, would provide them with spiritual food.
• See Qtly, Mon, par 2, 3
He who gives men power to get wealth has with the gift bound up an
obligation. Of all that we acquire He claims a specified portion…. “Bring ye all
the tithes into the storehouse” (Malachi 3:10), is God's command. No appeal
is made to gratitude or to generosity. This is a matter of simple honesty. The
tithe is the Lord's; and He bids us return to Him that which is His own. Ed 138.4

3. A “faithful” tithe is a tithe given by faith (Sab, Wed, Thu)

• Tithing is trusting God with our finances.
o Returning a tenth of our income to God is truly an act of faith.
God does not compel anyone. From the earliest times, tithing
revealed a trust in God to provide for one’s daily needs.
• See Qtly, Sab, par 2
• Our faith is revealed by our adherence to God’s instructions
(see Rom. 10:17).
o Therefore, a faithful tithe is one that is given
• according to the amount God requested (a tenth)
• in the place He requested (“My house” – His church)
• and for the purpose He requested (support of the ministry)
o Anything less than this cannot be considered a “faithful” tithe.
• See Qtly, Thu, par 7
CONCLUSION
All should remember that God's claims upon us underlie every other claim.
He gives to us bountifully, and the contract which He has made with man is
that a tenth of his possessions shall be returned to God. The Lord graciously
entrusts to His stewards His treasures, but of the tenth He says: This is Mine.
Just in proportion as God has given His property to man, so man is to return
to God a faithful tithe of all his substance. This distinct arrangement was
made by Jesus Christ Himself. This work involves solemn and eternal results,
and it is too sacred to be left to human impulse. 6T 384 (Qtly, Fri, last par)
