A detailed lesson plan in Grade 7 Mathematics

DATE:

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. find the numerical value of an algebraic expression by substituting the individual variables for numerical
values,
b. by substituting multiple variables given as a simple expression, such as 𝑥+𝑦=5,

c. use the numerical value of an algebraic expression to draw conclusions about real-world systems.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

Reference: E-MathElementaryAlgebrapp.199-202, Khan Academy and Quipper Instructional

Materials: Laptop, Projector, Power Point Presentation, Visual aids, Activity cards.

III. Instructional Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparatory activities

1. Routinely activity

a. Prayer and greetings Ask one student to lead the prayer.

b. Checking of attendance

B. Lesson Proper
Review:
What was our lesson yesterday? Sir! The lesson yesterday was about Writing
Algebraic Expression to English phrase and vice
versa.
An algebraic expression is a mathematical
statement that contains a combination of
numbers, symbols, variables and
mathematical operators. It does not have an
equal’s sign.
1. 2x-3

I need 5 students to give me an example of 2. x + 2 x +1
Algebraic Expression and write it on the 3. X 2 +2 X Y + y 2
board? 4. x +5
5. x-1
C. Motivation
Complete the puzzle.

6 + = 14 6 + 8 = 14
+ + + + +
+ 9 = 7 + 9 = 16

+ 17 = 30
13 + 17 = 30

D. Introduction
Algebra is one of the most interesting and
challenging part of Mathematics. It is where
other branches of Mathematics are derived.
Also, it provides written language in which
mathematical ideas are expressed that makes
things easier, and problems are simplified
using notation and numbers instead of verbal
descriptions.

E. Discussion/ Application
Evaluating an algebraic expression simply
means that we have to simplify or reduce the
expression down to a single numerical value.
As we have discussed earlier, variables can
assume multiple values. Hence, in evaluating
algebraic expressions, we have to substitute
numerical values to the variables.
For example: 2x–y
Evaluate the algebraic expression =2(4)– (2)
1. 2x –y for x = 4 and y =2. =8–2
=6

4x+3, where x=4

2. 4x+3, when x = 4
Solution:
4x+3
=4(4) +3
=16+3
=19

2 x−3
2 x−3 3
y +2
= 3−3
6
3. where x= , y=4
y +2 2
3
2( )−3 0
2 = ∨0
¿ 6
4+2
F. Generalization
In evaluating algebraic expressions, we need
to follow the two steps and always never
forget the PEMDAS Rule. And the steps in
solving word problems in order to evaluate
algebraic equation we need to translate
English Phrases to Mathematical Phrases.
G. Evaluation
Find the value of the algebraic expression.
6 x− y 6 x− y
1. where x=−2 , y=3 1.
2 x+ y 2 x+ y
2. 4 xᶟ where x=5 6(−2)−3 −15
3. 10 x+10 y +5 z = = ∨−15

4. 3 w−x−5 y−z =4(5 ¿ ¿3 =500
where w=1 , x =1 y =−1 , z=−1

5. 5 +3 x where x =2 3. 10 x+10 y +5 z

4. 3 w−x−5 y−z

5. 5 x +3 x
