Retaining Wall
Retaining Wall
Flashfloods and landslides are the most common problem our country is
suffering right now due to the unpredictable weather caused by climate change that
results to heavy rainfalls which is one of the factors that aids in having flashfloods.
The Philippines is prone to tropical cyclones due to its geographical location which
generally produce heavy rains and flooding of large areas and also strong winds
which result in heavy casualties to human life and destructions to crops and
properties.
A neighborhood near the river situated along Brgy. Tabinas, Sapang Dalaga
was greatly affected by heavy flashfloods that often carry away some trees along the
river, and these floods can destroy buildings, roads, bridges, etc. When heavy
flashflood occurs, the road nearby the river became inaccessible to any kind of
transport vehicles and that could affect the people living near the area in terms of
transporting goods and also, they needed to be evacuated for their safety as the water
level of the river reaches their houses. It could also give a negative impact to the
economy of the municipality as it blocks the roadway going to one of the tourist
destinations in the place.
A retaining wall is a structure used to keep soil, rock, or other materials and
stop them from eroding or rolling downhill. Retaining walls are frequently used in
civil engineering and landscaping projects to level terrain, prevent erosion, and
support buildings. The primary objectives of retaining wall are to resist against lateral
pressure from the soil or other material that is holding back. The wall needs to be
strong enough to resist the amount of material being retained, the load of the wall
itself, and any external forces such as wind or water pressure.
The aim and objectives of this study is to avert the effect of soil erosion,
floodings, and over flow of small river in Brgy. Tabinas by using a properly accepted
engineering standard through designing a cantilever retaining wall that will be
suitable for the type of soil to be retained and be able to drain sufficiently the amount
of water that will flow into it after rainfall or flood.
Overall, a cantilever retaining wall can be an effective flood control solution
in riverbanks, but it must be carefully planned, designed, and built to ensure its
stability and effectiveness in protecting nearby structures and property.
4.1 AutoCad
AutoCad, an original CAD software will be used to create precise, detailed
and very constructive 2D drawings, layouts and models of the designed seawall.
4.2 Sketchup
Sketchup, a software that will be used to develop 3D drawings, layouts and
models of the designed seawall efficiently.
4.3 Google Earth Pro
Google Earth Pro will be helpful to allow visualization, assessment, overlay
and creation of geospatial data of the said location in the municipality of Katipunan,
Zamboanga del Norte.
4.4 Laptop
Laptop can be a tool in using the above software applications, and also in
using Microsoft applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint etc.
5. Where will the research be conducted?
The research will be conducted in the coastal area of Brgy. Tabinas, Sapang
Dalaga, Misamis Occidental.
