Different Types of Sand Used in 3d Printing

There are several types of sand used for 3D printing, including silica sand, zircon sand, ceramic sand, and resin sand. Different Types of sand used in 3d printing

Silica Sand
Silica Sand is typically a form of Silicon
dioxide (SiO2), made up of two main
elements - silica and oxygen.

It is also known as White sand, Quartz sand

and Industrial sand, that comes with a wide
range of shades, mostly white or colourless.
The colour of the sand depends chiefly on
the rock detritus and a variety of minerals that make up the resource.

It is obtained by the quartz materials from the sources like beach

dunes and processes them into different types and grades of sand, and
then supplied to different industries for various applications.

Silica sand possesses some criteria that it must contain, at least 95%
silicon dioxide and equal to 0.6 % iron oxide, if not it is considered as
regular sand.

Silica sand is an essential part of the

production of steel, ferrous and non-
ferrous foundry industries for de-
oxidation and grain refinement.

For obtaining desired internal or external

shapes, metal parts are cast in silica sand.
It is a preferred choice for castings that
involve cast iron, steel, titanium and also
used to clean the casting surfaces.

Price :
The normal price of the silica sand used in industries is around 9500
rupees per ton . The prices may differ based on the quality .
What is zircon sand?
Zircon, also known as zircon
silicate (ZrSiO4), is found in
ancient mineral sand deposits.
In the form of crystal sands,
zircon is typically brown, but
could also vary from colourless
to yellow-golden, pink and red
to blue and green.

Zircon is one of the two core

product streams from ‘mineral
sands’.

The majority of zircon sand is

mined in Australia and the
African continent. Current annual global production is in excess of one million
tonnes. Almost half of the zircon produced globally is consumed by China, with
other significant consuming regions including Europe, North America, Asia-
Pacific and India.

Zircon sand is directly used in foundry applications and refractories and other
minor applications.

The cost of zircon sand is around 1,24,000 rupees per ton .

CERAMIC SAND

Ceramsite sand (SuperSand) is also called Ceramiste, Ceramic

Foundry Sand, and Nice Foundry Sand. It is an artificial
foundry sand that is regarded as the right substitute for
chromite sand, ziron sand, and fused silica sand. It is well
regarded as a revolutionary new foundry sand. Refractory
Engineers, Inc. supplies Ceramsite (SuperSand) to foundries
around the USA.

The cost of ceramic sand is around 6000 rupees per

ton . This may differ .
Resin sand
Resin sand is a type of quartz sand that is mixed
with a resin material. The chemical reaction
created by the resin helps to bind and stiffen the
quartz sand to make solid, hard and strong molds.
The resin sand can be used to create just a part of
the mold, or the entire mold material. The mold
can create 3D products in a variety of shapes,
configurations and sizes. Once the mold is made,
materials are poured into the mold as the sand’s
refractory properties help the mold remain stable.
Then the sand is removed through a shakeout process as the metal is then cut,
ground, finished and assembled into the final product.
Resin Coated Sand is manufactured by coating washed and graded dried sand
grains with phenol formaldehyde resin liquid and Hexamine hardener with
lubricants by warm coating process.

The type of the resin sand varies as the cost of the resin that is used has different
prices , but the average price for the sand is around 7000 rupees per ton .
