Current Transformer & Voltage Transformer
Insulation
Characterized by the rated voltage:
Burden power
The reason why we called load on CT as a burden is that, like a normal.
Transformer, CT secondary can’t be kept open. As high current is stepped down to lower
value, open CT secondary will cause 0A current in secondary, which will ultimately lead to a
high voltage which may burn the CT secondary winding and can damage the system. So it is
necessary to load the CT secondary continuously and ultimately it acts a burden on CT, and
that’s why the load on CT is named as a burden.
Current error ε (%)
Error that the transformer introduces in the measurement of a current when the
transformation ratio is different from the rated value.
Characteristics of VT:-
These are defined by standard IEC60044-2.
Insulation
Characterized by the rated voltages:
either between phase and earth and in this case Upn = U/√ (e.g.: 20/√ )
or between phases and in this case Upn = U.
Transformer applications
In MV electrical distribution, the high current and voltage values mean that
they cannot be used directly by metering or protection units.
Instrument transformers are necessary to provide values that can be used by
these devices which can be:
Analogue devices, directly using the supplied signal
Digital processing units with a microprocessor, after
analogue/digital conversion of the input signal (e.g.: Sepam or
Power Logic System).
