Introductory Message

Welcome to Research 8!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts

of the Schools Division of San Carlos City and DepEd Regional Office VI -
Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management
Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators
(teachers, parents, and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also
assist the learners in acquiring lifelong learning skills, knowledge, and
attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Research 8 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and the
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links
to ease independent learning.

For the learner:

The Research 8 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue

learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you
with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform
the activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your
facilitator on the agreed schedule.

Invention vs Innovation

I. Learning Competency with Code

o Differentiate the characteristics between invention and innovation.

II. Background Information for Learners

Science uses experiments, mathematical formula, laws principles,

theories, and conceptual relationships in the process of validation to form
new ideas, invent new technology or innovate in the marketplace. But
science cannot do it alone, it needs alive and curious human beings that
can inquire, discover, invent, and innovate.

The environment where you are today is the result of human discovery,
invention, and innovation arising from the essential work of engineering and
scientific research. What is invention? How does it differ from innovation?

Invention vs Innovation

Inventions are led by curious people dissatisfied with existing methods

and methods of working. It is a formulation of new ideas for products or
processes. It uses understanding and discovery to create a new way of
working and functioning. e.g., a device is constructed, a process is
developed.

On the other hand, innovation is a practical application of new

inventions into marketable products or services. It broadly disseminates and
distributes this new way of working or functioning to the greater society.

Innovation can be further categorized into two: Product Innovation

and Process Innovation.

Product innovation is launching new ideas or improvised products

on the market. It is considered as the “first-mover advantage” which
includes higher prices and profitability. Process innovation is seeking
better or more competent ways of creating current products or delivering
existing services. It reduced the cost as well as improved the quality of the
product.

1
To achieve market success and potential performance respectively
inventions and innovations both require applied research. A simple learning
strategy is an improvision strategy, an important aspect of applied research.
It is a trial and error approach to learn how to achieve market success in an
invention and better performance in innovation.

Investors who are successful can identify more than just a technical
sequence of steps. Possessing the personality and characteristics and a
mind-set of making the right decision when needed to be done make them
successful. This may be a bit harder to learn and master than the steps in
innovating, but it is more important.

III. Activity Proper Directions: Identify if the given picture below is an invention
or innovation. Write INVENTION or INNOVATION and explain why. A sample is
given for you as your guide. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
