1. What is parole?
It is a process or form of early release from prison that is granted to inmates who
have shown good behavior inside the prison. Parole has been granted in a prisoner
for a conditional release to serve his/her remain sentence outside the prison under
supervision of a parole officer. Offender or prisoner are required to comply with
certain conditions like treatment programs and so on.

2. Who is Manuel Montesimos? What was his contribution to parole?


Manuel Montesimos was well-known for his contributions to institutional
organization through military-style discipline. He concentrated on providing
vocational training and education to prisoners.

3. Who is Georg Michael Obermaier? What was his contribution to parole?


Georg Michael Obermaier was a German penologist known for his contributions to
the development of the modern parole system. He served as the director of the
Bavarian prison system in Germany and was a strong advocate for rehabilitation.
He developed the "Obermaier Plan" which allowed prisoners to progress through a
series of stages, starting with supervised work release, followed by conditional
release, and eventually full release. The conditions for release became increasingly
lenient at each stage, and prisoners would be granted more freedom as they
demonstrated good behavior and progressed in rehabilitation.

4. Who is Alexander Maconochie?


Alexander Maconochie was a British naval captain and social reformer who is
widely regarded as the father of modern parole. He was appointed as the
superintendent of the Norfolk Island penal colony in Australia. He was tasked with
implementing a new system of penal reform, known as "Marks System."
Maconochie had a significant influence profound impact on the development of
parole systems.

5. Who is Sir Walter Crofton?


Sir Walter Crofton was an Irish prison reformer who is best known for his
pioneering work in the development of the Irish system of parole in the mid-19th
century. He implemented a system known as the "Irish system" which focused on
the rehabilitation of prisoners through education, training, and employment
opportunities.

6. Who is Zebulon R. Brockway?


Zebulon R. Brockway was an American penologist who founded the Elmira
Reformatory in Elmira, New York, in 1876. He is widely considered to be one of
the pioneers of the modern parole system in the United States. Zebulon R.
Brockway adopted an indeterminate sentence law. He developed a system of
indeterminate sentencing, which allowed for the early release of prisoners who
demonstrated good behavior and progress in rehabilitation.
7. What is Mark System?
The Mark System is a concept that was first introduced by Alexander Maconochie,
a British naval captain. Alexander proposed this system as a means of managing
prisoner behavior and providing incentives for rehabilitation. Prisoners may be
granted additional privileges and freedoms such as attending educational programs,
performing work duties, or maintaining good conduct. This system will provide a
structured means of monitoring the progress of prisoners.

8. What is the Irish System?


Sir Walter Crofton is the one who administrated the Irish System. In order to
implement this system, Crofton created the idea of "ticket-of-leave," which
permitted inmates who had exhibited good behavior to be released on parole before
serving out their entire sentence. These inmates were required to report to a parole
officer and follow certain conditions, such as regular check-ins and avoiding
criminal behavior.

9. What is an Indeterminate Sentence?


When a person given an indeterminate sentence, the length of time he/she will
spend in prison is not specified or not fixed. The person is given a range of time
that they will be required to serve. The release is based on factors such as their
behavior and progress towards rehabilitation. It simply means that it is based on
the offender's behavior, rehabilitation progress, and other factors.

10. What is Determinate Sentence?


Determinate sentence is a fixed-term sentence that is imposed by a court as a
punishment for a specific criminal offense. In other words, it is a sentence with a
specific length of time that the offender must serve in prison.
