ENG2052 - Final Exam - Answer Sheet

Student Nguyễn Hồng Vân submitted an answer to an essay question for their Introduction to British and American Studies class. The 588-word essay discusses a political cartoon about Brexit that depicted both the promises and realities of the UK leaving the EU. The student argues that Brexit will negatively impact UK trade with the EU, cost jobs, and hinder economic growth, but may improve security by reducing open borders. While Brexit will likely have both costs and benefits, the long-term effects depend on individual and government actions.

ESSAY QUESTION #
(Write your answer here. Please use the standard font, size 12, and spacing 1.5.)

On 4 May 2018, the Guardian published an article concerning the matter of the United
Kingdom leaving the European Union, of which content mentioned a drawing of cartoonist
Paresh Nath. The drawing was of two parts, named “project fantasy” and “the realities”
respectively. The former showed a man with a bowler hat riding on a UFO while holding
the Union Jack in his hand (an epitome of a British man), and the latter was a picture of him
surrounded by four sharks representing “trade issues”, “job confusion”, “economic
uncertainty”, and “chaos”. Thus, it could be interpreted from this that Nath was a remainers
holding a viewpoint against Brexit, as he has pointed out some of the disadvantages the UK
might face as they decide to leave the EU, and from a personal perspective, I would partly
agree with his opinion.

Taking trade issues into account, being part of the EU had always granted the UK
exemption from tariffs as well as other international trade barriers (Staff, 2020). The bloc
facilitated the operation between its country members in various sectors such as in
financial service, which greatly benefits businesses in exporting and making deals with
other countries’ enterprises within the EU. Therefore, leaving the UK would certainly result
in depriving businesses of these advantages and rights, hence their being subjected to
numerous problems while adapting to the newly-established Brexit rules. Moreover, in
research from Ward (2021), in 2019, the EU was the most significant trading partner of the
UK, as it constituted 47% of the country’s total trade, which means Brexit would highly
undermine the trading relation between the UK and its greatest partner, thus inhibiting the
economic development of itself.

The second issue to consider is how Brexit would adversely affect employment in the
United Kingdom. According to Staff (2021), approximately more than three million people
in the UK have jobs in the export industry to the EU. As mentioned above, trading activities
will decline as soon as the withdrawal takes place, and this would certainly lead to
tremendous job cuts, forcing millions of British people into unemployment. Furthermore,
increased unemployment has always been a critical problem that brings about a knock-on
effect and exacerbates different social concerns such as poverty, debt, and homelessness.

Also discussing this issue, Stuart Rose - a remain supporter- identified leaving the EU
would result in shortages in the workforce, a decline in economic competitiveness and
consequently, hinders economic growth.

The reason why I tend to partly agree but not completely agree with what is illustrated in
Paresh Nath’s drawing is due to his claiming that Brexit would create chaos in the United
Kingdom. I believe this problem would go otherwise, for Brexit would actually keep chaos
out of the country. Remaining in the EU means that the UK still applies the free movement
rule between EU members and leaves the country open for various foreigners to enter
without proper checking procedures and security measures. This situation, therefore, make
the UK to be more terrorist-prone and more likely to be subjected to sudden attacks (Staff,
2020).

In conclusion, though the event of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union was
much supported, it has also come under fire by many British people and citizens around
the world like mister Nath. It is apparent that either decision would finally lead to both
advantages and disadvantages upon people’s lives, but whether the countries could
successfully tackle them or not, rests on the effort and the determination of every
individual as well as of the governments.
