Components and Steps in Preparing a Health Career Plan.

Marie: Oookayy, now, planning for a career is an important stage that

you

Must take as a student. If we are going to be honest, It is not an

easy task to do.

Melbourne: I agree, there are lot of stages to take and factors to consider.

You might consider taking a career in healthcare which is a fast-

growing industry here and abroad, right Marie?

Marie: Yes, that is about right, the health care industry consumes over

10 percent of gross domestic product of most developed

nations, health care can form an enormous part of a country's

economy.. In short, health career offers good salary, job security

and most especially you will make a difference on people’s lives.

Melbourne: That’s true, there are a lot of careers you may consider in

healthcare. For example: Nurse, doctor, surgeon, nutritionist, or

pharmacists.

Marie: And, knowing the different components of health career plan

and preparing one is beneficial. A health career plan has four

steps. Each step will lead you to a suitable health career.

Melbourne: Yes, but before we go through the mentioned steps, let us first

Zen: Health careers refer to the different careers related to medical

and other allied health professionals. The tasks of health care workers

and professional are enormous yet rewarding because their works

focus on wellness and prevention of illnesses. As healthcare providers,

you must have the skills in communicating, decision making, problem

solving, and stress management. You should also be aware of legal

and ethical responsibilities and cultural considerations in healthcare

industry.
Marie: Okay Zen, can you give us examples of different health careers,

Particularly those jobs that are high in demand today.

Zen: Yes Marie, according to bukas dot ph, nursing is one of the most

in-demand jobs today, considering the ongoing global pandemic.

Nurses are in-demand hindi lang sa Pilipinas kundi pati na rin sa ibang

bansa. Our country is one of the biggest suppliers of nurses in the

world, with an estimated number of 240,000 nurses worldwide. Nurses

do various vital tasks, such as conducting physical exams, checking a

patient’s vital signs and performing other health-related testing.

Melbourne: Can you give us insights on why more and more filipino nurses

are seeking employment abroad instead of working here in the

Philippines?

Zen: Well Melbourne, if I’m going to say it in simple words, it’s

because of the better working conditions attainable abroad, we have

here Dr. Renz Julius Lalosa of the Lancet to give us his insight. Dr.

Lalosa?

Renz: “Yes Ms. Perez, Almost a fifth of Filipino healthcare workers are

working overseas. In 2019 alone, at least 17,000 Filipino nurses signed

overseas contracts.“The impact of out-migration was more evident

during the COVID-19 pandemic, with mass nurse resignations and

consequent migration due to unjust compensation, unreceived benefits

and hazard pay, and delays in insurance reimbursements.

Melbourne: What about the working conditions for nurses here in the

Phlippines?

Renz: “Working conditions were straining and debilitating as well, as

health care workers were forced to work longer hours, with sub-optimal and

inadequate protective equipment. Increasing infection among hospital staff members

further worsened health care worker shortages, pushing the Philippine health system

to the brink of collapse.”

Melbourne: Ahh kaya pala, narinig ko 40 percent daw ng mga private

hospital nurses dito sa pilipinas ay nag resign. Ang lala ng problema nun, mas

maganda ba para Sa kanila ang magtrabaho abroad?

Renz: Yes Melbourne, Better social, economic and professional

opportunities, more robust infrastructure and technologies, and the possibility of

family reunifications are some motivations to seek overseas employment. Higher pay

and benefits are just a few reasons that Filipino nursing students are opting to study

and work overseas. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses have already

sought for greener pastures in hospitals abroad. In short, mas maganda ang working

conditions abroad kumpara dito.

Melbourne: Ahh, pano naman yung mga salary difference?

The salary differential is particularly glaring. The annual income

of a first-year medical resident in the Philippines is averaged at 720

thousand pesos while their counterparts in the US earn P 3 million

pesos. Average yearly income yan ha. Mid-level Filipino public hospital

nurses earn 57 percent lower than their peers in Vietnam, the second

lowest paying country in Southeast Asia. Napakalaki ng gap.

 Entry-level and private hospital nurses receive even less,

averaging P10,000 a month when household expenditure is averaged

at P19,886.

Renz: Yes, Of the 867,974 registered Filipino healthcare workers in

2018, only 22 percent remain in service. Just think about it. Showing our nurses

some love and better pay may keep them here. Otherwise, leaving for abroad is a

choice they can’t be denied.
