Guidelines for crea/ng your ethnographic photo essay


Examples are available under assignments “ethnographic photo essay” on canvas.

The sooner you upload, the sooner I can check your work. If you upload at midnight on Tuesday I
probably won’t be able to look over your work.

Introduc/on

- What is your topic?


- How did you decide to choose this topic?
- What is your main research ques/on?
- What are your sub-ques/ons?
- Methodology (how did you answer these ques/ons? How did you get your informa/on?
Where did you observe? Who did you interview? How many? (general descrip/on,
remember to give a pseudonym to any individual that you discuss in your project, NO
REAL NAMES)
- Choose one picture to introduce your topic (Instagram capture, picture of school or
loca/on where you observed your subculture)

Findings

- Choose 1 umbrella theme and 3 sub-themes.


- Choose a photo to represent your umbrella theme and each sub-theme.
- Define your umbrella theme (describe the paXern that you see that you have grouped
under this theme – what do you mean by your theme “boundary making” for example?)
o How does your umbrella theme help you answer your main question?
- Then define each sub-theme. (Describe the paXern that you see that you have grouped
under this theme)
o What sociological concepts from class help you understand this subtheme? (see
list on back)
o How does your umbrella theme help you answer your main question?
o Give evidence from your data (a quote from interview or something you
observed) to support your argument.

Conclusion

What sociological framework can you apply to understand your data?
