B.TECH DEGREE EXAMINATION

FIFTH semester
Branch: Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering
Model Question paper

EI010 505 Control Engineering I

Time:32 hrs Maximum marks: 100

Answer all questions.

PART – A

1. Define Transfer function of a system.

2. What is meant by the type and order of a system?
3. How will you find the gain K at a point on root locus?
4. State Nyquist stability criterion.
5. What is need of compensators in a system?
(5x3=15)
PART – B
6. Reduce the block diagram given below to obtain the transfer function .

7. A system behavior is described by d2y/dt2 +3 dy/dt +2y=x(t). Obtain the impulse

response of the system.
8. The characteristic equation of a servosystem is given by b0s4 + b1s3 + b2s2 + b3s + b4
=0. Determine the conditions for stability.
9. Write down the MATLAB commands to obtain the phase and gain margins of the
system with transfer function .

G(s)= 9(s2+0.2s+1) / s(s2+1.2s+9).

10. Draw the electrical circuit of a lag-lead compensator and derive the
transfer function.

(5 x 5= 25)

PART C

11. Draw the analogous electrical circuit for the system shown below
stating clearly all the analogous quantities . Verify it by writing the
necessary equations.

12. Consider the closed loop system given by

C(s)/R(s) = wn2 / (s2+2ξwns+ wn2). Determine the values of ξ and wn
so that the system responds to a step input with approximately 5%
overshoot and with a settling time of 2sec.
13. With the help of root –locus plot, determine the stability of the
system represented by G(s) =K(s+2) / (s2 +2s+3).
14. Draw the bodeplot for the system whose openloop transfer function
is given by G(s)H(s)= 25(s+10) / s(s+20)(s+100). Also determine

phase and gain margins.

15. The open loop transfer function of a system is given by
G(s)=1/s(s+1)(0.5s+1). It is desired to compensate the system so
that the static velocity error constant Kv is 5 sec-1, the phase margin
is at least 400 and the gain margin is at least 10dB.
