• Backward Diode:-
A backward diode is a semiconductor device which works in reversed
biased mode. It is designed by providing variation in the design
characteristics of Zener diode and tunnel diode. It is unilateral device
because its designing mechanism allows it to operate in one direction
only.
• Gun Diode:-
The Gunn diode (or transferred electron devices, TED) is a semiconductor
component with negative resistance that converts the energy of a constant-
voltage power source into the energy of high-frequency oscillations due to the
formation of a strong field region (domain). Despite the fact that this
electronic component is referred to as a «diode», this technology does not rely
on PN junctions or the Avalanche Principle; it is composed only of N-doped
semiconductor material.
• Laser Diode:-
A semiconductor device that generates coherent light of high intensity is
known as laser diode. LASER is an abbreviation for Light Amplification
by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Stimulated emission is the basis of
working of a laser diode laser pointers, CD/DVD/Blu-ray reading and
recording, Laser printing
• Photodiode :-
A special type of PN junction device that generates current when exposed to
light is known as Photodiode. It is also known as photodetector or
photosensor. It operates in reverse biased mode and converts light energy into
electrical energy.
• Pin Diode:-
This type of diode is characterized by its construction. It has the standard P-
type & N-type regions, but the area between the two regions namely
intrinsic semiconductor has no doping. The region of the intrinsic
semiconductor has the effect of increasing the area of the depletion region
which can be beneficial for switching applications.
• Junction Diode: -
The standard PN junction may be thought of as the normal or standard type
of diode in use today. These diodes can come as small signal types for use in
RF (radio frequency), or other low current applications which may be called
as signal diodes. Other types may be planned for high voltage and high
current applications and are normally named rectifier diodes.
• Schottky Diode:-
Schottky diode is a device, which comes under the type of a metal –
semiconductor junction diode. Barrier diode and low voltage diodes are the
other names for Schottky diode. When compared to a PN junction diode,
power drop is lower in Schottky diode. A scientist named Walter.H.Schottky
first discovered Schottky diode.
• Tunnel Diode:-
The tunnel diode is a highly conductive, heavily doped PN- Junction diode in
which the current induces because of the tunnelling. The tunnelling is the
phenomenon of conduction in the semiconductor material in which the charge
carrier punches the barrier instead of climbing through it.
