MULTIMEDIA AND ICT

WEB 2.0
- The term Web 2.0 was coined by information architecture consultant Darcy DiNucci in 1999
and predicted the influence it would have on public relations. It was later popularized by
O'Reilly Media during the Web 2.0 Conference in 2004.
- Web 2.0 is the second generation of the World Wide Web. It focuses on the web as a platform
and offers more opportunities for user-generated content, social networking, and
interactivity. It is the World Wide Web as it is used today.
Interactivity
- Interactivity refers to the capability of a system or platform to respond to user input and
provide two way communication experience. It allows users to actively engage with digital
content, manipulate elements, and receive real-time feedback or responses

Concept
- Web 2.0 is an interactive and collaborative web platform that allows users to create, share,
and interact with content.
- Interactivity and Rich Content are closely intertwined in the context of Web 2.0. Rich
content enhances user engagement, encourages user-generated content, and facilitates
social interaction. Interactivity, in turn, complements rich content by providing users with
opportunities to actively participate, collaborate, and personalize their online experiences.
Together, these elements håve transformed the web into a dynamic and interactive platform
where users can contribute, comment, and engage with content in a more meaningful way.
- Rich Content in the Online Environment and the User Experience, Multimedia and
Interactivity and Web 2.0, Web 3.0, and User Participation in the Web.
- The user experience serves as a tool to measure the usefulness of a product or service. It is
his behavior as a person towards the application or product that evaluates through his
reaction while using the product.

Basic Elements of Multimedia

Text
- Contents express specific information
Images
- Makes the content visually appealing. Common image file formats used are JPEG, PNG, GIF,
and TIFF. Images can also be interactive like buttons, navigation menus, and backgrounds.
Video
- Adds more attraction to users. Flash, MPEG, AVI, WMV, and QuickTime are common digital
video formats. Video can be embedded within the content or linked stored outside the
content.
Audio
- Aids interactions with users, it can also be added as a background. MP3, WMA, Wave, MIDI,
and RealAudio are standard audio formats. Audio can be embedded or streamed.
Animation
- Can include effects allowing users to interact with the mouse or keyboard. Common
animation formats are FLV, SWF, and ActionScript codes for animated and interactive effects.

Multimedia and ICT

ICT
-
Provides the tools and infrastructure necessary for the creation, storage, processing, and
distribution of multimedia content.
Multimedia
- Multimedia content often relies on digital technologies, including computers, software
applications, networks, and the internet, which are all part of the ICT domain.

Types of Multimedia

Linear Multimedia
- Presents information and active content without any navigation control for the viewer.
Non-linear Multimedia (Hypermedia Content)
- It presents information requiring users’ interactivity to control progress. The users control
the delivery of elements
Online Multimedia
- Used in applications available with internet
- Videos through video hosting sites e.g. Netflix, Youtube, and I Want TV.
- Sound, Music, or Audio- You can share your sound bites to the entire world through spotify
or other online music software applications.
- Courseware- Online courses that simulate the classroom online e.g. Coursera and edX.
- Podcast- episode series of audio or textfiles streamed online.
Offline Multimedia
- Application presented and used even without the internet.
Hybrid Multimedia
- Combines features of online and offline applications.
