Vermicompost

This document describes a farmer's process for producing vermicompost using earthworms. The farmer collects cow dung and urine from his 5 cows, uses it in a biogas plant to extract methane, and then adds the filtered cow dung mixture to pits. He introduces African earthworms to the pits to feed on the cow dung and produce vermicompost over time. Every 3 weeks he harvests, sieves, and dries the vermicompost to package and sell as fertilizer. The vermicompost enhances plant growth and soil quality in an eco-friendly and organic way.

VERMICOMPOST

Farmer name: K. Aruna pillai

Place: Mannampandal, Sirkali

INTRODUCTION
Vermicomposting is an organic and biological process in
which earthworm species are primarily used to convert organic matter or
biodegradable wastes into manure.
Vermicasting, also called vermicomposting, is the
processing of organic wastes through earthworms. It is a natural,
odourless, aerobic process, much different from traditional composting.

MATERIALS REQUIRED
 Cow dung
 Earthworm
 Coconut husk (fibre)
 Tarpaulin
 Pit

EARTHWORM SPECIES USED: Eudrlis eugenia(African

earthworm)

PROCEDURE :
Pit:
 A pit can be maximum 4ft breadth & 10 ft length.
 The walls of the pit can be built with cement or plastic bag.
 The depth is 2ft.
 First the base is covered with plastic bag or Tarpaulin.
 Then base of the pit is covered with coconut husk.
Cow dung:
 Farmer has 5 cows, from that he get Cow dung & urine.
 He has a gobar gas plant
 Cow dung and urine are used in gobar gas plant for extraction
of methane.
 After that, the filtered Cow dung mixture is carried to a tank
through a pipe.
 In the tank, the excess water is filtered & the mixture is in moist
condition.
 Make sure the cow dung mixture is cool.
 Then the mixture is transferred to Pit.

EARTHWORM APPLICATION:
 After the application of half decomposed Cow dung in the pit,
earthworm are introduced.
 Then after 1 week another layer of decomposed Cow dung
mixture is applied.
 After 14 days, the mixture turns into Vermicast.
 After two to three days the Vermicast is taken out & seived.
 Earthworm will be separated from the Vermicast & the earthworms
are again released in the same pit.
 Likewise every three weeks the procedure is repeated

AFTER HARVESTING OF VERMICAST:

 The Vermicast is harvested & seived.
 Then it is shade dried.
 The well dried Vermicast is packed in air tight plastic bag.
 Then it is properly stored.

MARKETTING:
 The Vermicast is packed in 1kg or 5kg for kitchen garden
use & in a 50kg bag for agricultural field use.
 Cost : Rs:10 – 12 /kg
ADVANTAGES:
 It enhances plant growth.
 It suppresses disease in plant.
 It increases porosity & microbial activity.
 It increases water rentention & aeration.
 Higher yield.
 Eco-friendly.
 Improves soil quality.
 Fully organic.

DISADVANTAGES :
 Excess water stagnation will kill earthworm.
 Efficiency depends on amount of organic waste.
 It may attract rats, rodents, snake, also birds.
 Also centipede & other bugs.
 Unpleasant odour.

PRECAUTIONS:
 Cover the pit with Tarpaulin.
 Use Coconut tathched roof for cool environment.
 Use neem cake for protection against insects.
 Use net around the pit to avoid rodents, rats & birds.
