Lesson : Quarter 2 Week 6 LAS 3

Activity Title : Simplifying Radicals
Learning Target : Simplifies radical expressions by reducing the index
Reference(s) : Mathematics 9 Self-Learning Module (Quarter 2-Module 6)

LAS Writer : Bernadette N. Santos

Express the radical into an expression with a rational exponent then simplify
the exponent or apply the law on radical

𝑚 𝑛 𝑚𝑛 𝑛 𝑚
√ √𝑎 = √𝑎 = √ √𝑎

Example: Simplify:
20
32m15 n5

Solution1:
20
32m15 n5 = 4 5
( )
25 m 5 n 5
3
= 4
2m 3 n

Solution 2:
20
32m15 n5

(2 m n ) = (2m 3 n )4 =
1 5 15 5 1 3 1 1
= 5 15 5 20
= 2 m n 20 20 20
= 2 m n 4 4 4 4
2m 3 n
Radical expressions can still be simplified if the index of the radical and the exponent of the radicand
have a common factor, thus the expression can be written with a lower index. We call this process
reducing the index in order to simplify the radicals.
