To do: Receive a grade
For this unit’s Written Assignment, you will utilize the UoPeople library to find 2-3 sources for
your own research paper. You will then create a 2-3 paragraph Literature Review based upon
your own analysis and synthesis of those sources. You grade will primarily focus on the use of
your own ideas to group together your sources for your own research paper. Your ability to create
and give credit via APA In-Text Citations and a Reference page is also a focus.

If you need an extra tip for this process, refer back to the University of Cumbria’s critical reading
questions you have worked with in the past units.

For this week’s written assignment, the three sources that I have chosen are:
“The relationship between addictive use of social media, narcissism, and self-esteem: Findings
from a large national survey.” From
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0306460316301095?via%3Dihub

“Measurement Invariance of Social Media Use in Younger and Older Adults and Links to
Socioemotional Health.” From

INTRODUCTION:
The last several years have seen a meteoric rise in the popularity of social media, which has
resulted in an expansion of both its reach and its influence in today's culture. Although
participation in virtual groups may develop a sense of identity and connection, there is a
correlation between the use of social media and problems with mental health. Anxiety and
depression are only two of the mental health issues that have been linked to excessive or
irresponsible use of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. The emphasis of this
research is on how the use of social media might impact the mental health of young people. The
conclusions of this literature review concentrate on how the time spent on social media by
adolescents influences their sense of identity. Maintain vigilance concerning how each platform
impacts users' mental health and to what extent this occurs.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE / ANALYSIS / SYNTHESIS

SELF-ESTEEM:
Andreassen et al. (2017) performed a simple cross-sectional survey of Norwegians using the
Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) to study the relationships between pathological
social media consumption, narcissism, and self-esteem. This was done to learn more about the
relationship between these three factors.

Higher BSMAS scores were related to being younger, being female, being unmarried, having a
higher academic standing, having a higher financial position, having higher self-esteem, and
having more narcissism. These characteristics accounted for 17.5% of the variation in the data.
The findings provided support for the notion that compulsive use of social media is linked to a
desire to enhance one's ego, which is linked, in turn, to narcissistic qualities and the urge to hide
a low view of oneself. The findings that compulsive use of social media is associated with a
desire to advance one's ego supported this theory.

Sharifian et al. (2021), who used multi-group structural equation models (SEM) to determine that
higher levels of social media use were associated with increasing levels of depressive symptoms
in young individuals but not in older persons, came to similar conclusions in their study. They
found that higher levels of social media use were associated with increasing levels of depressive
symptoms in young individuals. In particular, young people revealed a link between their use of
social media and feelings of jealousy.

When we analyze the findings of these studies, we find that the negative effect that using social
media has on one's sense of self-worth is significantly exacerbated the younger the age group
studied is.

SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES (SNS) INCLUDE FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM,

YOUTUBE, AND TWITTER:
The Royal Society for Public Health in the United Kingdom was surveyed in 2017 to look into
the effects of young people's social media use on their mental health. The findings of the study,
which were based on the replies of over 1,500 people who were between the ages of 14 and 24,
provided a clear picture of the influence that social media has on problems such as anxiety,
melancholy, bad sleep, and body image.

INSTAGRAM: According to several studies, Instagram is the social media platform that has the
most negative impact on the mental health of young people. The well-known photo-sharing
application had a stronger negative impact on the users' sense of self-worth and the quality of
their sleep.
FACEBOOK: It was discovered that the detrimental effects of using Facebook are equivalent to
those of using Instagram but to a lesser extent. Facebook did have some detrimental
consequences, but it also had some beneficial benefits, notably in the areas of providing
emotional support and the development of communities, and these positive aspects outweighed
the negative effects.

TWITTER: The most positive effect that Twitter had was on people's ability to express
themselves, but it also had a detrimental impact on people's ability to sleep and on bullying. The
researchers were able to predict depression symptoms with an accuracy of up to 70% by
examining each post in the thread independently.

YOUTUBE: When looking at the effects that social media has on well-being, it became clear
that YouTube was one of the platforms that contributed the most. The fact that it makes it
difficult to get to sleep is among YouTube's most significant drawbacks.

It is not difficult to see how the numerous social networking sites are having an impact on
today's youth. The factors that determine the level of popularity that particular social media sites
enjoy have not received enough research.

METHOD: The proposed research question is one that I intend to tackle using interaction
analysis. Interaction analysis is a method for studying and understanding human interactions by
unitizing and coding sequences of observed interactions in their natural settings with high
reliability. As a result, we'll be able to compare the various platforms and learn how they can
positively affect young people's emotional well-being.

CONCLUSION:
Because childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood are such formative and vulnerable times
for the development of social and emotional skills, we must gain a deeper understanding of the
effects that social media has on health during these stages of life. The authors of this literature
review took into consideration both the positive and negative effects that young people's use of
social media might have on their mental and psychological health. It established a connection
between young people's usage of social media platforms and the onset of debilitating mental
health conditions in those people. There is a need for a study on social media-specific strategies
to lessen the negative impacts of using these platforms.
