ELT MEDIA SONG

1. What is meant by song for teaching?

Answer:
According to Horn (2007), mentioned that song signaled a positive improvement
in listening skills between seventy-two second language learner students in a primary
school in South Africa. This opinion suggests that song strongly leads the students in
improving their listening skills, one of the four main skills in English language learning.
Based on the finding of his research, the uses of song succeed in improving the ability to
master English in general.
In language learning, the students start to learn with the listening process. That’s
why the use of song in language learning is very important. This statement supported
byThornbury (2002) that explained children will acquire the listening skill first, as they
have not yet learned how to read. The listening process also backs up with visuals, facials
expression, movement, mime and through pictures. The whole process namely the
starting point in learning language for the students.
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of learning with song?
Answer:

The advantages

● Learning English through sing a song can add some more of skill. Examples: speaking,
listening, vocabulary, writing, etc.
● Learning English through song is more fun and happier.
● Easier to use this learning activity for young learners.
● We can add some more activity connect in sing a song learning process. Example:
Gesture, dance, Games.

The disadvantages

● Having much time when using this sing a song learning process.
● The teacher handles the situation class between play and sing a song or dancing to be
balance in the class situation
● Add some more gesture and activity or games that can't be bored during learning process.

3. How to teach listening through song?

Answer:
The listening activity above is rich in communication. The teacher always asks the
students again and again with some tasks and the students react immediately to what the
teacher instructed, and finally they are able to comprehend the berkaitan dengan mulut
text totally, and as a result their comprehension is full and the listening is also useful. In
other words, the teacher teaches listening effectively. As told before that effective
listening is being able to understand the language (grammatical ability) and the way the
language is used in different situations (interactional ability). In addition, effective
listening will guarantee the success of listening activity. There are three kinds of
communicative listening (Harmer, 2001). Those are:

A. Filling in forms The simplest kind of listening materials of this kind involves filling in
forms of one kind or another. When the teacher and students have checked that they have
filled in the forms correctly they can organize a follow-up task in which students
interview each other to fill in similar personal details. To make it more fun the teacher
can prepare a series of role cards so that students are not repeating information about
themselves which they have already used in smaller chunks for language practice.
B. Directions Understanding directions is clearly a important skill and in this activity, the
elementary-level students have to listen to the audio recording in order to find a spot on a
map. As a result, this activity drills students to bevery careful and attentive to the text
mentioned.
C. Jigsaw listening Jigsaw listening is a listening drill to describe an activity in which
different students get different information from different listening passages which they
then have to share in order to perform some kinds of task

4. Steps for teaching speaking by listening to songs :

⮚ The first step is the teacher chooses a song with lyrics that are familiar to the
students' ears. If the students are familiar with the lyrics of the song, of course
they will often listen to the song. Don't pick a song they've never heard of.
⮚ After the teacher chooses a song that the students like, often invite them to listen
to it. After that, the next step is to try to ask students to copy the song word by
word, sentence by sentence on a sheet of paper or a book. After finishing, the
teacher checks whether the writing of the lyrics that the students made is correct.
In this step students can learn writing.
⮚ After success in writing, the teacher asks students to try to increase vocabulary.
The teacher asks students to open their dictionary, then asks students to find the
meaning of the words in the lyrics of the song. I believe that after students know
the meaning of the words in the lyrics of the song, then the risk of forgetting will
be very small because these words are in the students' favorite songs and the more
often students listen to them, of course they will understand the meaning of the
song through the knowledge of vocabulary that students have learned. know
beforehand.
⮚ After successfully increasing the students' vocabulary, now they can learn
pronunciation through the song. Make sure the students listen carefully to how
the singer sings the song and recites each word. Ask them to repeat it. The more
often they listen to the song, the better the ability to pronounce the lyrics of the
song.
⮚ After that students can learn speaking. At this stage the teacher can play a song
and invite the students to sing along. Of course, by choosing a song that students
like, they will want to sing it together. Try to sing the song with the students.
When students sing the song, it means they are learning speaking.

5. Song: Fine Today

Full lyrics:

We will find a way

To be honest make no mistake

Sometimes I pray

Tell me how to make you stay

And you always going to be the one for me

Though we'll be fine today

Have a drink for the ol' time

Perfect time to say

"You are my happiness"

And you always going to be the one for me

There were times when it rains

Just the thing kept me sane

It's too much for a little time of fame

But you saved the day

Yes, you saved the day

You always going to be the one for me

Where to find you again?

There's no one seems to care

It's too much for the average man to stay

But you saved the day

Yes you saved the day

And you always going to be the one for me
