Tutorial 1 (Chapter 2) Stat

Bubble charts display data as circles where the dimension field represents each circle and the measure field represents the size of the circles. Scatter plots help display relationships between two numerical variables. Histograms show the frequency distribution of a measure field. Tree maps display hierarchical data through nested rectangles where dimensions define the structure and measures define the size or color.

Bubble charts

Bubble charts display

data as a cluster of
circles. Each of the
values in the dimension
field represents a circle
whereas the values of
measure represent the
size of those circles.

A bubble chart requires

at least one dimension
and one measure. Visual 10 – Bubble chart showing sum of sales for
each customer segment.
Scatter Plot
A scatter plot
helps to display
relationships
between
numerical
variables.

A scatter plot Visual 11 – Discount vs. Sales

requires at least Discount vs. Sales

two measures. per segment per shipment
mode
Histogram
A histogram
can be used
to show the
data
frequency
distribution of
a measure
field.

Tree map
Use treemaps to display data in nested rectangles. You use dimensions to define the structure of
the treemap, and measures to define the size or color of the individual rectangles.

Crosstab
A crosstab chart in
Tableau is also called
a Text table, which
shows the data in
textual form. The
chart is made up of
one or more
dimensions and one
or more measures.
This chart can also Visual 14 - Crosstab summarizing sales between customer segment and
show various product category
calculations on the
values of the
measure field such as
running total,
percentage total, etc.
Heatmap
Heatmap is a visualization where marks on the view are represented using
color.

Dual Graph
• It is useful to compare two
measure fields across one
dimension field.

• Example
• Step 1 – Drop order date and
sales in the column and row
shelf, respectively.
• Step 2 – Drag and drop the
profit field at most right of the
visual.
• Step 3 – Right click the profit
axis and choose synchronize
axis.
• Step 4 – Under the marks,
select Sales and change its Dual graph comparing the sales and profit across years (2018-2021)
shape to bars.
Waterfall chart
• It is normally used to demonstrate
how the starting position either
increases or decreases through a
series of changes.

• Example:
• Step 1 – Drop sub-category in
column and profit in the row shelf
• Step 2 – Sort the bars
descending
• Step 3 - Change the mark type
to Gantt Bar
• Step 4 – Drop profit in size card
and color card

different sub-category products
Funnel chart
• Useful to show how the value of a
field changes as it moves further
(i.e. down) to the following
process)
• Example:
• Step 1 – Drop sales to row
shelf.
• Step 2 – Drop region to color
card.
• Step 3 – Drop sales to size
card
• Step 4 – Sort the marks
descending
• Step 5 – Label the marks with
percentage of total (hint- use
quick calculation table).

across different regions
Geo Map
• Geo map is used to show
the distribution of a field’s
data across different
location e.g., countries,
states, districts etc.

• The latitude and longitude

data of the locations are
required to create a geo
map.

• The latitude and longitude

data of the locations are
usually auto-generated by
Tableau.
