Let’s play: PRESIDENTIAL PROPOSALS. Let’s imagine you’re a candidate. What
proposal will you offer to the people if they choose you?

DIALOGUE
Read the following conversation between siblings out loud with your tutor then
switch roles. Pay attention to the underlined sentences.

“What’s your favorite movie genre”?

Henry: Are you up for a movie tonight?


Elain: I don’t know, the weather sucks lately. Look, it’s raining again.
Henry: Well, if it clears up later, we will go out. I’m so bored.
Elain: Fine. But if it continues raining, I won’t go out with you.
Henry: Fine, but if we go, what movie will we watch?
Elain: Well, there’s a new movie releasing today. I just don’t remember the title.
Henry: It could be any type of movie but not romance. I hate romance.
Elain: Why do you hate romance? That’s my favorite movie genre! And the movie
is romance.
Henry: Oh, come on! Why don’t we watch another movie?
Elain: Fine. But, if we watch another movie, how will you reward me?
Henry: Hmm, if we watch any other movie, I’ll do the dishes for one week!
Elain: Great! You’d better keep your promise!
GRAMMAR FOCUS

The First conditional is used:

✓ To say that one thing depends on another.

✓ To talk about a future situation is possible.

✓ To talk about a possible result.

✓ If the first condition happens, something else will happen as a result.
