Answer all questions

Question 1

Consider the BJT circuit in Figure 1. Assume that the following values remain constant during
the operating conditions,  DC = 100 and VBE = 0.65 V,
(a) Calculate:
i. Base, collector and emitter currents [15 Marks]
ii. VCE and VCB [10 Marks]
iii. DC alpha,  DC [ 5 Marks]

(b) Determine whether the transistor is operating under cut-off, linear or saturation condition
if base current is increased to 0.75 mA. Assume VCE(sat) = 0.3 V. [30 Marks]

(c) If a 2N3904 transistor is used and the circuit is operating at the temperature of 45 oC .
Referring to the data sheet in Appendix 1 and the circuit operating with the base current
and VCE(sat) as in part (b),
i. Determine the power rating of the transistor at the given operating temperature.

ii. Determine the maximum value to which VCC can be adjusted without exceeding a
rating. Which rating would be exceeded first? [35 Marks]

Consider the BJT circuit as in Figure 2(a).

(a) The output (collector voltage) of a biased transistor amplifier is shown in Figure 2(b). Is the
transistor biased too close to cut-off point or too close to saturation? Justify your answer.

(b) If RC = 300 Ω, RB = 20 kΩ, VBB = 5 V, VCC = 15 V,  DC = 120 and VBE = 0.6 V, calculate:

i. Base, collector, emitter currents and 𝛼𝐷𝐶 [20 Marks]


ii. VCE and VCB [10 Marks]
iii. If PD ( rating ) = 800mW , power derating factor = 5mW / C , I C ( rating ) = 100mA and
VCE ( rating ) = 30V , determine the maximum value which VCC can be increased without
exceeding any rating. Which rating would be exceeded first if the circuit is operating at
35oC and IB is increased to 0.9 mA?

(b) Consider the collector feedback bias circuit in Figure 3(b), determine the values of:

Consider the common-collector BJT amplifier in Figure 4. Assume that the following values
remain constant during the operating conditions,  DC = 100,  ac = 120 and VBE = 0.7 V,
Calculate:
(a) The exact voltage gain for the amplifier without the load. [35 Marks]
(b) The total input resistance, Rin(tot) [25 Marks]
(c) DC and AC output voltages. [20 Marks]
(d) The voltage gain for the amplifier with the load. [20 Marks]
