The weaving contest

1 My name is Athene. I am a goddess!

I am the best weaver in the land.
I can take a heap of bright wool and some glass beads,
and turn them into the most beautiful tapestry
you could ever dream of.

But today I have had a real shock.

E
I have found out that a girl – a mere mortal! –
PL
called Arachne is saying that she can weave better than I can!

2 She’s a cheat, an imposter!

M
I am in such a bad temper,
I want to spit in her face!
SA

I’m going to pay little Arachne a visit,

and I will teach her not to steal the thunder of Athene!

This must be the girl.

She’s seated at her loom, weaving!

839860_Module_16_Workbook_13.indd 4 23/02/2017 10:36

3 Arachne!
I will challenge you to a weaving contest!
Let me tell you, I mean to win!
You will not beat me, the goddess Athene!

4 Two looms, two seats, two heaps of wool.

Two weavers.
Please sit here, little Arachne.
Let the contest begin.

E
Our arms move back and forth across the bright cloth.
The looms are creaking.
PL
As we weave, no one speaks.
M
5 Ha! I know my tapestry will be the best.
Look at the light on my stream.
SA

Look at my ducks, each with its golden beak

and its bright wings.

6 Have you finished yet, Arachne?

Please let me see!

But what’s this?

You have shown not just a stream, but the mighty sea!
I see waves, leaping fish, plump seals and a ship at anchor!

839860_Module_16_Workbook_13.indd 5 23/02/2017 10:36

7 Here are sheaves of wheat – and peach trees.
I see wreaths of green leaves, and fantastic beasts –
they look so real. I can almost see them breathing!

Arachne, Arachne, you can weave so neatly!

I admit it – you must be the best weaver in Greece!
I know what I’ll do!
I will cast a spell on you!
You will weave ceaselessly for the rest of your days!

E
8 That’s it! You are shrinking, shrinking …
PL
Look – you are as small as a pea!
It’s no good pleading with me!
Let me pick you up, little Arachne,
M
and hang you from this beam.
Stop screaming, Arachne.
SA

No one will come to help you.

Your voice is no louder than a flea’s.
Look – a skinny black leg!
Three – six – seven – and one more!

Start weaving, Arachne!

Weave, weave, for the rest of your days!
