CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
A lot of students coming from poor families, especially those who have strong determination to
pursue
With their dream of finishing a degree will usually opt to apply for work either in private
companies
or in schools where they are enrolled. Fortunately, job opportunities can be found and/or availed
in
The only means of a poor student in his/her strong determination, courage, hard-work and of
being teachable and willingness to learn and improve himself or herself in whatever task
assigned to him
Usually, well determined students came up successful in reaching their goals and objectives in
life.
They have experienced so many hardships and challenges, and learn that to be on among those
who have reached the top of their ambitions they should strive more and work hard for it.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Our country suffers from the different crisis such as socio economic crisis, political crisis, as
On the other hand, to help solve some of these issues and concerns, education has an important
role in addressing thse challenges. it is the only way to achieve ability that will lead toward Prosperity
and progress. Education is divided into stages such as Pre-school, primary school and secondary and
college or the Tertiary level.
According ro (Mark Berin) on his level study on the academic performance of working student
saud, ''working student are those who work outside the school responsibilities, and among the
Student reasons to work outside their home. One of these, is that they want to help their parents in
earning money to meet the needs of their family, these may include their everyday need
Among the working student in Gunyan National high school (GNHS) the most common reason why
students work while studying is financial independence. Not all parents have enough income to
send and support their children in school, especially in college. As a result, some students have
as a Working student, among those who are looking for somebody to help on their household chores,
as a gardener or as a casual farm laborer receiving daily wages to support them on their studies.
Being a working student is responsibility adopted by many less fortunate but willing young adults and
adults individuals. The reason is economic hardships and scarcity of financial resources.
Working in a number of hours, and then studying afterwards in the next few hours can help generate
income for matriculation and other needs as a students.(Velasco,2014)
In Moris Triventi’s study, he looked into the effect of working in higher education.
He found that working at low-intensity had positive effects but higher-intensity
jobs, 35 hours or more per week, tended to have negative effects. Some of the
positive effects are increased independence, ability to budget, managing a
schedule, and gaining soft skills, such as communication and problem-solving
skills. Some of the negative effects are higher risk of dropping out, delayed
graduation rates, and negative effects on academic performance. He found that
full-time workers tend to have less time for academic studies and school activities.
Non-workers average 17.0 hours of studying per week and part-time and full-time
workers study 15.7 hours a week. Full-time workers also attend class less time per
week. Part-time workers in this study were able to deal with the effects of working
while in school (Triventi, 2014).
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
These studies will focus on working students and how it affects their level of academic performance .
In Rajeev Darolia’s study, there was a correlation between number of credits completed and number of
hours worked per week. This study states that 80 percent of students work at some point in their
undergraduate program and numbers of hours worked per week increases each year. Some students
take fewer credits due to work commitments. Part-time and full-time students tend to spend less time
studying (Darolia, 2014). This can lead to delayed graduation dates and more debt from more years of
schooling. The time-to-degree ratio is higher, which in turn costs the students less future earnings. The
study points out the negative effect of working to be lack of time for school-based activities and leisure
activities, which can help with overall health (Darolia, 2014).
These articles helped by guiding us to ask questions about how many hours the participants work per
week and how many credits they were taking. Then, we can correlate their hours of work to their grade
point average, (GPA). This is to see if lower intensity work would aid or hinder academic performance.
According to the working students of Gunyan National high school (GNHS), the common reason why
students
are working while studying is for financial assurance. However, there are several advantages and
disadvantages of being a working students. The advantage of being a working students can be
enumerated into the following aspects: 1) Working students can support their financial needs for their
studies;
2) Working students will be able to help their parents on some financial needs for their family. Some of
the
negative side of a working students can also be mentioned or listed following: 1) students may tend to
sacrifice their time in working rather than giving more time in studying and working on their
assignments
or homework; 2) working students have less time in studying their lessons in class which require
extensive
reading and writing, hence both aspects are negatively affected (Power,2013). They can be always
sleepy in classes and less time for studying in class. This may result in poor academic performance and
low grades
Working while studying can also affect the physiological and psychologica, social well being of the
student.
Lack of sleep is one of the major problems of working that can result in greater procedural errors which
places the student at risk. Lack of sleep affects the body temperature mood and brain function.
SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM
This study is delimited only on the effect of working students in academic performance Among student
at Gunyan National high school (GNHS)
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1.1 Age
1.2 Sex
1.3 Gender
WORKING STUDENTS
This study will motivate them to manage their time responsibilities toward school and work so
that their academic performance will not be affected in favour of their work or vice versa.
PARENTS
This study will give the parents idea on the problem working students have encountered.
this will motivate them to become supportive and more understanding towards their children.
SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR
School administrator will benefit from the result of the study by applying the proposed action
plan which will help minimize drop-outs among working student.
TEACHERS
This study will give teachers an idea on the problem encountered by working students, thus,
they could understand them better.
DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
WORKING STUDENT
Working students are those who work to earn money to self-support their educational financial
needs.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
students achievements in school either of getting good grades of failing grades or a getting
honors and awards during commencement exercises or dropping out if school in the long run.
CHAPTER 2
One of the disadvantages of being a working while studying is that they are often short on time and
commonly find themselves with limited time to study, sleep, socialize and maintain healthy eating
habits. In a study conducted by one of the main complaints among working students is that they find
themselves without enough time to eat right Instead of consuming healthy foods, such as fruit and
meats working students often grab a quick meal comprised of low quality foods that contain sugar and
high sodium. This is not to say that students should feel discouraged and not work while in highschool or
college , but instead be mindful of the commitment and plan accordingly. For example, students who
work everyday might benefit from a 7 day food preparation technique at the beginning of every week.
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
This Chapter presents the methods in collecting data. This represents the research design, research
locales, and population.
RESEARCH DESIGN
This study used descriptive research to determine the Effects of Being a Working Students on Academic
Performances among selected students who studied at Gunyan National high school.
RESEARCH LOCALES
Structured questionnaires were distributed among selected students ofsome Universities. The
researchers used primary and secondary data to gather information in analyzing the research study.
Primary data were gained by given questionnaires to the respondents, while secondary data were
collect through internet, articles and other published materials.
POPULATION
The target population for this research defined to include the working students in Gunyan National high
school and some Universities since these are the working students within the researcher’s reach. In this
study,
SAMPLING
A stratified random sampling procedure was used for selecting the participants in this study. This
technique was employed to ensure a fairly equal representation of the variables for the study. The
stratification was based on private owned schools in San Vicente province of Laguna.
CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION
This research shows that it’s really hard to work while studying. Most of the working students is lacking
in sleep, being tired from work then go to school. And they don’t know how to manage their time
properly. But still, a small percentage of students says they’re okay having a job while studying. .
In 20 students participants in this study, the researchers prove that working and non working students
have the same belief with the thought of working while studying.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Therefore the researcher recommend to those who want to work while studying, you should manage
your time first. ask yourself if you’re capable of doing things. As a working student we need to focus on
two topics or two lifestyle. The lifestyle of a worker and a lifestyle of a student at the same time. If we
just focus on one topic or lifestyle then we won’t be able to be responsible. We need to be flexible as
much as possible
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
This qualitative research study deals with the effect of being a working students on the academic
performance among students in Gunyan National high school. A total of 20 respondents of students in
Gunyan National high school are involved in this study wherein their experiences on being a working
students.
