Pile Foundation Methodology
Pile Foundation Methodology
Objective:
The purpose of this civil work methodology is to define the procedure for pilingconstruction works for the
project in accordance with the requirements specifiedin the relevant technical specifications, procedure, shop
drawing, consideringsafety and quality of the work activities
Scope of Work:
The scope of work may include piling construction work at the existing groundlevels, dewatering and
excavation for the pile cut off level.
Foundation System:Pile Foundation:
When pile foundation is adopted, following are adhered to;
i) The pile foundation is RCC, Cast-in-situ Bored Piles as per IS:2911. Pileboring to be
done using self-erecting Rotary Hydraulic Rig. Flushing ofpile bore is ensured.
ii) The diameter of pile is 1200 mm. The allowable load carrying capacityof the pile in
different modes (vertical compression, lateral and pull-out) are taken as per drawings.
However, the pile capacity shall beadopted as the least of the estimated design value, and that
observedfrom the Initial Pile Load Test.
Survey Work:
Prior to piling works, the site platform should be prepared and maintained in adry and safe
condition.Necessary survey shall be carried out the setting out of the pile centr
e positionsas per shop drawing. The pile location will be marked with lime powder. Thesetting out pegs
will be consisted of steel reinforcement bar. The pegs will bemarked with colour ribbon for easy
locate/reference.
Methodology:
Boring:
a) Boring tool (Bucket) is attached to the Kelly of the Hydraulic Rig. Initialboring is performed
at the point marked for the pile location. Afterreaching a depth of 3 m, the casing of 3 m depth, is
lowered such that thetop of the casing reflects the RL of pile top level
b) Boring is carried out using the bucket. When hard layer of soil / clay isencountered, the Bucket is
replaced by the Auger of the same diameterand boring is continued.
c) Freshly made Bentonite water of the desired density is added to the borefrequently during boring to
enable stable bore and ease in boring.
d) When the desired bore depth / Tip of Pile reached, the boring is stoppedand the depth is check in the
presence of Clients’ and Contractors’Representative.
Placing/Lowering of Reinforcement Cage:
a) When the bore is complete and bore depth checked by the Engineers-in-Charge the reinforcement cage is
lowered slowly and steadily into thebore.
b) It is generally fabricated in two or three pieces, depending upon the siteconditions and depth of
bore.
c) Proper placement of cover blocks ensure smooth lowering of cage into thebore
Tremie Lowering:
a) Tremie of 8’ is lowered into the bore using tremie head. Each piece isattached tightly enough to
allow water and concrete to flow through itsmoothly.
b) Tremie till the tip of the pile is entered into the bore. On completion, it isattached to the
vertical pump of the Bentonite tank for bore washing.
Bore Washing:
a) After proper tremie lowering, the bore is washed with the solution ofbentonite of appropriate density.
b) Washing is done for a period of 15-20min to ensure stability of bore wallsand to remove any
possible impurity left in the bore during boring.
a) Freshly made, green concrete of desired grade (M-30/M-35) is used forconcreting in pile.
b) The Tremie head is removed, and a hopper is attached at the top of thelast tremie to enable concreting.
c) A temporary plug is attached at the mouth of the hopper, and the hopperis filled to the top. The plug is then
suddenly pulled out and the concreteis allowed to pour continuously without any breaks.
d) It is, however, to be ensured that the all the concrete required for the pileis available at the
site, before starting concreting.
Post-Concreting:
a) On successful completion of the concreting, the tremie pipes are slowlyremoved from the
bore and each piece is removed, and unlocked andwashed in the bentonite water. The casing is also
pulled out and removedfrom the pile on completion of casting.

Safety Measure:
a) Necessary safety measures need to be maintained during execution of thePile Works. If the work in night
time, sufficient lighting shall be provided
