ThePracticeofBeingWithJesusChrisCruz Sample

The document discusses finding rest and presence with Jesus by sitting at his feet like Mary did rather than allowing anxiety to drive overwork like Martha. It encourages choosing intimacy with God over productivity and addresses covering feelings with busyness instead of addressing them. Spending time with Jesus stills the heart and mind and frees one to do what he asks.

A Daily Path into God’s Presence, Curing the Restless Life,
and Living as a Disciple

Chris Cruz
Week One Day One

Presence
Jesus, be with me. My life is nothing without you. I long to be in Your
Presence where I find rest. Wash over me with your love and cast
out all of my fears. You’re my safety. You’re my hiding place. You’re
the one I run to. Everything is different when I am with you. As I rest
here with you, overshadow me with Your loving Presence.

Silence
(2 minutes of sitting in silence being present to Jesus and yourself.)
Worship
Tell Jesus the place He has in your life and what He means to you.

Meditation
Psalm
63
Matthew 11:28-30
of the Week Read it. Pray it. Ponder it.

“Come to me, all you who are

weary and burdened, and I will
give you rest. Take my yoke
upon you and learn from me, for
Matthew 1 I am gentle and humble in
heart, and you will find rest for
your souls. For my yoke is easy
and my burden is light.”

Scripture and Devotional

Luke 10: 38-42
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a
woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she
had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to
his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And
she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister
has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord
answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled
about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen
the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
Devotional
I’ve heard people say we need to have the attitudes of both Mary
and Martha. They say it as an attempt to stop people from being
unorganized, lazy and not serving. The problem is that Jesus didn’t
say to have both of those mentalities.

Jesus is revealing that Martha is covering up her life.

Jesus shows Martha to herself through Mary. Martha realizes she’s

only serving to cover up her anxiety. This isn’t a productive person.
This is a person that is busy doing things to avoid the anxiety they
have within themselves. I am sure there are many things for Mary to
do but she knows one thing is necessary and that is intimacy.

We need to be reminded that productivity for God does not trump

intimacy with God.

Jesus sees through facades and recognizes there’s something

deeper. Martha can’t recognize the opportunity in front of her. She
tries to cover up her anxiety by doing all the “right things” and
complains when people are not doing what needs to be done. She
judges her sister who has chosen to sit at Jesus‘s feet instead of
being busy with all the serving.

Jesus shows Martha that she is worried about many things thinking
they are important, but Jesus helps her understand there is only one
thing that is necessary.

This one thing should draw her attention because only then will she
not mask her anxiety with work. We often sacrifice our time with
God to get things done in life. We can tell ourselves, ‘we don’t have
time to spend with God, there’s too much to be done. We’re worried
our life will fall apart if we stop to be with Jesus.

We don’t feel safe enough to stop. We don’t trust that being with
Jesus will make us more productive in the long run. We’re addicted
to the overwork attitude of our day.

It’s popular to be busy.

We don’t see the flaws in overworking ourselves. Yet, if we give our

time to Jesus He will heal our anxiety which is driving our work,ulti-
mately allowing our work to flourish. There will always be things I
can accomplish that call for my attention. There will always be
people to serve. There are always problems to solve. There are
always ways to cover up our anxiety with doing.

Jesus invites us to let all that go and be with him.

We all know that is the only thing that will really cure our anxiety.
Jesus gives us peace that puts an end to our overworking which
frees us to do what He is asking us to do in life.

Be with Him.

Question

Do you find that you cover up your feelings

with doing things instead of addressing
them?

Prayer
Jesus,
I come to sit at Your feet. Please still my heart, mind, and
hands. Jesus, I repent for hiding behind my work. I repent for
allowing the world’s standards of busyness to steal away
from my time with You. I ask that You show me where I am
choosing work above relationship today. I come now to sit at
your feet like Mary did. Ready to breathe in your peace and
Presence. Thank You for grace and wisdom. I love you, Abba.
Amen.
