CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

One of the most well-known and influential social media platforms is TikTok,

which enables users to upload, view, and share brief films online using their mobile

devices. It establishes a trend that amuses individuals, primarily students and

teenagers, by enabling them to duet with other users as a type of response to their

video. This trend is both entertaining and has the potential to be a reliable source of

information. The Chinese technology company Byte Dance, which operates TikTok

under the name "Douyin" in China, introduced the app in 2016. Since then, it has

expanded to over 150 markets and offices throughout the world. Based on the

observation in the month of September, it became the most installed application

monthly in the App store surpassing the other social media such as Facebook,

Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat. (Badriya Abdul Jaffar, 2019) Three years later,

it began to feature brand adverts for companies that created user accounts on

TikTok.

A large number of individuals can also become popular with the app by just

posting their entries to a trend and making it viral. As more people use the app,

celebrities also add their profiles to the app making it more entertaining and enticing

for the younger generation. These individuals—also known as "influencers" or

"content creators"—are adored by internet users because what they see in their

videos can be applied to how they connect and engage with others in their everyday

lives. Teenagers and young adults make up the majority of this platform's users,

making them more susceptible to being persuaded by what they see on the

application. Teenagers in the Philippines have been known to watch films about

eating disorders and suicide in just three to five minutes, which is considered to be

potentially dangerous material for younger generations. (CNN Philippines 2022)

Addiction to TikTok can have a significant impact on a person's social and

emotional behavior, and it should not be underestimated because it can change how

someone views the lives and careers of others. Despite the fact that people can

spread positivity by sharing their daily routines, ways of unwinding, sources of

information, and insights into others' perspectives, this can also serve as a platform

for promoting certain online issues like cyberbullying and disorders that may cause

someone to act out emotionally. The audience is kept interested in the application's

algorithm by the content they want to see, which may become addictive. This is the

most likely explanation for why TikTok may be contributing to the rise in mental

health issues in our nation. As children's curiosity leads to endless exploration,

parental guidance is crucial because at a young age, children should be aware of the

content they should see and the potential effects on them.

As a result, our study prompts students to consider the potential effects of

social media use on health. This should finally provide an answer to the research

question: "What is the effect and influence of TikTok to a students' social and

emotional behavior?"

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on User-Centric Theory of Jiang Xiao Yu (2019) which

build the user relationship at the core, guide the user demand, build the user

experience at the core, view the user experience as the starting point and the

inspection line of the content production, as an integral part of media product

creation and development. TikTok deepens the user experience, reconstructs user

connection, combines different scenarios to meet user information interaction and

expression, provides customized services, achieves resource aggregation, and

creates value. The three dimensions of the user centric concept are sensory,

interaction and emotional. The fun, tension and novelty that TikTok conveys to the

user are all emotional responses. The user experiences a pleasant and comfortable

aesthetically pleasing experience through a wide range of channel senses (e.g.,

hearing, vision). The product form is an ethical experience representing the taste,

status and affluence of the user. Jiang Xiao Yu (2019)

With this, the researchers can clearly tell that the student’s behaviour could be

influenced by TikTok, including rudeness and lack of politeness. It is easy to see how

an addiction to social media changes a person’s personality. By using the aforesaid

studies, one can better illustrate and explain the impact of the overuse of this

platform on students and teenagers, and how severely these group of individuals

could be affected by what is seen on the social media. The theory could show how a

student’s way of interacting changes the more they engage to the online interactions

of the platform. Too much usage of this can exposed the young minds into

appropriate contents that could trigger their emotional well-being. On the other

hand, these individuals could feel a positive impact on this app naming their

entertainment and could be a way of sharing information and lifestyles for the

audience.

Definition of Terms

The following terms were defined operationally for an easier understanding of

the ongoing study:

Addiction. As defined, it is the inability to stop using the substance or

behavior even if it causes psychological and physical harm.

App Store. This means for digital distribution platform that allows individuals

to purchase and download digital software and applications. An app (short for

"application") is a software tool that provides additional functionality to the operating

system.

Emotional Behavior. According to the Mental Health Foundation as “Positive

well-being that allows an individual to function in society and meet the demands of

everyday life.”

Content Creators. It means the act of producing and distributing information

or media content for a specific audience, especially in a digital context

Influence. It relates to specific events, elements, or circumstances that cause

changes—positive or negative—in the ongoing or past course of action. It has more

to do with process than state. Relation to the study, this term is used as an action

that justify the effects of the problem to the subjects.

Influencers. It refers to people who engage with and communicate with a

particular kind of online audience. In the study, they have the power to influence the

subjects' choices and their conduct in regular contacts.

Mental Health. The term put emphasis on the student’s well-being including

their emotional and social well-being. It relates on how a person think, feel, and act.

This study will show how a social media platform could affect the thinking of a

person, specifically, students.

Social Behavior. The term underscores the way individuals interact,

communicate, and react to their environment in relation to their survival and

subjective intentions. These interactions lead to social relationships.

Social Media. It refers to the means of interaction between people who

create, share and exchange information and ideas within a virtual community or

network.

Socializing. It pertains to a process that includes sociability as an element,

whereas socialization is a process that includes sociability as an element, but is a

more complex, multifaceted and formative series is an interactive experience.

Teenager. The term underpins the as the subject of the research, the people

who are greatly affected by the problem of the study. Aligned to this, the study is

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

Foreign Literature

The emotional effects of social media can be felt by users who depend on the

sites for social validation. According to studies, TikTok is contributing to a variety of

problems in children and teenagers, including addiction. Wojdan et al. (2021) list

feelings of inferiority, superiority complexes, and complexes of attractiveness as

some of the negative effects of TikTok addiction. The TikTok applications, available

for Apple and Android devices, enables users to make brief videos in which they sing

along to a variety of well-known tunes. People not only provide playback videos to

TikTok, but they also consume a substantial amount of video content, including

"LipSync-Videos" that may be downloaded for personal use, commented on, and, of

course, accompanied by a "Like." (Wojdan et al., 2021). TikTok overuse frequently

results in addiction.

Additionally, once someone becomes addicted on social media, their self-

worth is based on how many likes or comments a certain post receives. According to

recent studies, social media sites like TikTok share traits with other addictions

including drug and gambling addictions (Wojdan et al., 2021). The amygdala and two

other crucial reward-related brain areas are thought to be activated by extended use

of TikTok (Wojdan et al., 2021). The amygdala, which is found in the forebrain, is an

essential component of the feedback mechanism. Emotional reactions, conduct, and

inspiration are all integrated in the brain area. Teenagers who display indications of

addiction may have an overactive amygdale-striatal pathway, making them more

susceptible to a range of compulsive disorders due to their overdependence.

Local Literature

According to Xu (2020) The TikTok app is severely lively, with a variety of

online and offline activities aimed toward young people with imagination and

curiosity. As a result, the uploaders of TikTok 's video benefit from the comments

and replies. While TikTok may be enjoyable for children, it has both harmful and

beneficial consequences. According to fund (2021), TikTok can be the voice of many

people's opinions in the actual world. However, he also observed that TikTok is

incredibly addictive, and many users, particularly young ones, spend hours on it

daily, making it a severe distraction to students. Simoun (2020) acknowledged that

TikTok is a source of moral entertainment for young people, as well as a platform for

publicity, learning new things, and creating new opportunities for students to

volunteer and internship. According to Lee (2020), satisfaction with TikTok was

viewed as a mediator between different reasons to use and continue to use TikTok.

He also stated that research cannot prove an important connection between TikTok

use and well-being, whether beneficial or harmful. He also believes that TikTok is

used by young people to place themselves in their peer group and to understand

where he/she stands in the peer group. group and to understand where he/she

stands in the peer group. However, it cannot be disputed that TikTok has inspired

and assisted many individuals all around the world, based on internet testimonials

and studies conducted by scholars and social media enthusiasts. While it has been

honestly demonstrated that TikTok has both harmful and beneficial effects on kids.

But there is no denying that it has influenced the world of social media as we know it.

According to Goli and Khan, (2021), the youthful people's drive to notice

determine adoration and acknowledgment through their exercises are fortifying the

pattern of brief video making and imparting to online entertainment application like

TikTok. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that influence youth

TikTok app adoption. The "uses and gratification paradigm" was used in the study to

investigate the relationship between intention to use the TikTok social networking

app, narcissism, perceived ease of use, perceived enjoyment, and social influence.

241 young people between the ages of 14 and 25 completed a structured

questionnaire to provide the study's data. They were contacted through convenience

mode. The interrelationships among the constructs were investigated with the help of

structured equation modeling. The intention of users to use the TikTok app was

positively influenced by perceived enjoyment, social influence, and narcissism. The

study's conclusion has repercussions for academics and practitioners alike.

Estimates of the prevalence of maladaptive cognitive responses associated with

social media are lacking in the literature, despite growing concerns. Further, existing

investigations have lopsidedly centered around Facebook, while overlooking the

infiltration of TikTok and worries of related maladaptive ways of behaving. The

objectives of this study are to: 1) validate scale measures for problematic Facebook

and TikTok use (PFU and PTTU); 2) compare and contrast the underlying cognitive

pathways of PFU and PTTU among a sample of university students; 3) use Latent

Profile Analysis (LPA) to determine the cut-off score of the PTTU assessment scale;

and 4) assess the role that particular criteria play in the diagnosis of PTTU. The

psychometric properties of the scales used to measure PFU and PTTU were found

to be adequate. The scores between the PFU and PTTU scales were viewed as

unequivocally related, notwithstanding, the relationship was more grounded in the

gathering of Facebook clients than in the gathering of TikTok clients. Furthermore,

TikTok and Facebook did not always display problematic use in the same way. While

self-esteem was only negatively correlated with PFU, loneliness was positively

associated with both PFU and PTTU. The PTTU scale's optimal cut-off score was

found to be 21, resulting in an estimated prevalence of 8.7%. "Withdrawal" and

"relapse" were the criteria that had the greatest predictive power for the diagnosis of

addiction among university students. The study comes to the conclusion that, despite

the fact that the underlying addiction pathways are similar across platforms, the

manifestation of maladaptive behavior, as well as the factors that drive usage

intensity and problematic use, are distinct.(Troy Smith, Andy Short 20)

Local Studies

According to Narido et al. (2022), their study provides data on the relationship

between voting with social responsibility and participation in social media. Because

the elections affect all citizens of the nation, the findings demonstrated that

sociodemographic factors have no bearing on the likelihood of democratic

engagement. Besides, TikTok decidedly affects the chances of political race interest

among youthful grown-ups. With respect to web-based entertainment association, it

was found that terrible communications prompted lower chances of investment.

Participation rates were also lower when political goals like agriculture, education,

and law and order were prioritized. The examination used a study survey comprising

of three segments which were sociodemographic factors, virtual entertainment

crusade factors, and casting a ballot ways of behaving of the youthful grown-up

Filipino members.

As indicated in the study of Decenillan (2019), numerous understudies see

History as unbending, static, and exhausting due to its dependence on portrayal

teaching method, restricting their capacity to foster decisive reasoning skills. The

problem was solved by using self-made mini-lecture TikTok videos as an intervention

to increase the knowledge of 33 second-year Education students in specific topics

from their history course. Following 5 weeks length of execution stage, results

divulged that understudies' information in chose history subjects were improved as

information showed that the information acquired by understudies were examined as

complete and intelligent, contrasted with their insight in pre-mediation that were

sorted as broad and absence of information. In such manner, understudies showed

that utilizing independent small scale address TikTok video has positive effect on

understudies' learning conduct by setting off their craving to learn to acquire trust in

teaching their crowd while making learning history fun and engaging.

Synthesis of Related Studies

This exploration demonstrates the way that TikTok can influence understudy's

capacities to have the option to focus in class and finish their homework, so

understudies have the chance of doing more regrettable in a class assuming that

they use it without limits.

Taking into account of what it can mean for understudy's psychological well-

being in a serious manner is another significant negative the application has. The

self-esteem of younger adolescents can be seriously harmed, and as a result, it can

have a real impact on their physical health as well, when we see people who have

the better things in life that we might want. On the other hand, TikTok enables users

to learn and discover new things as well as opportunities ranging from volunteer or

internship positions. On the other hand, TikTok can influence a person's mental state

and subtly affect their behavior. They can easily communicate with others by using

social media like TikTok. It cannot be denied that TikTok is now a part of one’s lives

and has become beneficial for entertainment purposes, despite its negative effects.

The emphasis is on the effect of behavioral routines on the subconscious mind of the

students that results in habits that recur unconsciously. Such students find problems

with their time management as a critical factor determining academic performance

among students other ways, users must also be able to control themselves so as not

to invite inappropriate things that can lead to disgraceful behavior. Every social

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design and Method

The researchers employed a descriptive research method to determine the

effects and influence of TikTok to students’ social and emotional behavior. According

to Punongbayan (2021), descriptive research is expressed in words that is used to

understand concepts, thoughts, or experiences. This type of research enables to

gather in-depth insights on topics that are not well understood. In this study, the

perceptions of the respondents on how TikTok influence their social and emotional

behavior were analyzed in order to describe and construct concepts and ideas

relevant to the topic being studied.

about their sex, and number of hours using TikTok. Meanwhile, Part II dealt with the

assessment as regard the perceived effects and influence of TikTok to student’s

social and emotional behavior in terms of 4-point Likert Scale: Strongly Agree (4),

Agree (3), Disagree (2), and Strongly Disagree (1). Lastly, Part IlI of the survey

questionnaire included the suggestions of the students of the possible solutions or

interventions on how they can promote positive social and emotional well-being

among TikTok users.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers submitted the survey questionnaire to the adviser to secure if

it was right and if it is ready to distribute to the Grade 9 students of the Banilad

National High School. After checking it, another letter of request was given to the

adviser for the researchers to distribute questionnaires to the respondents. Through

the help of the adviser, the questionnaire were distributed to the respondents namely

the students. The questionnaire was retrieved by the researchers personally from the

respondents. The questionnaires was one-hundred percent (100%) of the total

respondents of the study.
