Activity 5 - Chapter 5 - Distinguishing and Constructing Various Paper-and-Pencil Test

The document discusses different types of paper-and-pencil tests used to evaluate student learning. [1] There are three general types: supply tests which require constructed responses; selection tests which involve choosing correct responses; and performance tasks which assess skills through activities. [2] Supply and selection tests measure thinking through written answers and options, while performance tasks demonstrate applied knowledge through presentations and projects. [3] Key steps in planning a test include identifying objectives, deciding the test type, creating a table of specifications, drafting items, and validating the test.

1.4 Essay-Expanded
2. Selection Type (Selection-response)

Answer the following questions:

1. Study the sub-types under each general type. What is the distinguishing feature
of each group? What is expected of learners to do in each type?
ANSWER: Creating objective tests to evaluate the attainment of educational
objectives is one of the responsibilities of a teacher. These tests are used to test

the hierarchy of educational objectives and assess higher-order thinking skills.
The groups contain a distinguishing feature that separates them from each other.

Supply type (Constructed response) requires students to provide sentence-

based answers by organizing their thoughts in a logical manner regarding a
subject matter. In this type, the learners are expected to express their ideas by
analyzing and explaining various concepts which enables them to illustrate,
criticize, and apply principles on a certain topic.

Selection type (Selected response) wherein it is designed to distinguish

students who are just guessing and those who truly know the answer. In this
type, the students are expected to select the best answer from the options
provided or match items on the options with their corresponding answers.

Performance task (Accomplish Task, action up function) type wherein it is an

assessment that tests the knowledge and skills that the students learned from all
their activities. This type enables the students to apply and demonstrate their
knowledge, understanding, and proficiency in their learning through a transfer of
skills. Furthermore, performance task type provides concrete evidence of
learning from the students. With this said, each group of assessment tools is
relevant in evaluating a student, not just only rote memory learning, but also
higher-order thinking skills.

2. What can differentiate Supply and Selection types from Performance Types?
ANSWER: Supply and Selection types can be differentiated from Performance
types through the construction of each assessment. Supply and Selection types
often include multiple options and/or questions that require explanation. They are
mostly written tests that evaluate their thinking skills by simply recalling facts and
providing short essay answers, depending on the given questions. Furthermore,
supply and selection types measure the analysis, comparison, explanation,
illustration, application, and criticism abilities of the student along with the
judgment skills that enable them to decide. On the other hand, the Performance
type focuses on both the knowledge and demonstration skills of the students.
This type provides activities that often ask the students to apply what they have
learned throughout their lectures. Presentations, reporting, student portfolios, and
projects that require engagement are some examples of the performance task
type of assessment.

3. What are the steps in planning for a test?
