EMPLOYING THE USE OF RIVER TAMARIND (Leucaena leucocephala)

LEAVES AS A PRIMARY INGREDIENT IN THE PRODUCTION OF

FLOORWAX

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

River Tamarind(Leucaena leucocephala) also known as, white lead tree.

Leucaena originated from the Greek verb leukainein meaning “to become white”,

while leucocephala also came from the Greek words leukos meaning “white” and

cephale meaning “head”.

Ipil-Ipil is very common to find alongside mountains and even in your

backyard. According to the website . Ipil-Ipil (River Tamarind) is an evergreen,

thornless shrub that grows quickly. It is densely branched and has a deep taproot

as well. The River Tamarind (Leucaena leucocephala) is a relatively simple plant

to grow and produces inexpensive floor wax. The leaves are bipinnate and have

several 8 mm to 16 mm long leaflets (Cook et al., 2005). It is also a sizable tree,

measuring between 5 and 20 meters.

Radaza & Amante et. al (2014) claimed that floor wax is necessary for

keeping a house in good shape. It serves as a coating for flooring to safeguard

them. Wax is an excellent water-proofing material since it is not soluble in water.

Some plastics' toughness, durability, and glass properties can all be enhanced by

adding wax additives.

Given this position, the researchers were inspired to create a low-price

and efficient way of producing floor wax to make floors smooth with the help of

repelling stains and spills to make it easier for cleaning. The unused Ipil-Ipil can

be made into fertilizer for crops, possible treatment for parasitic worms and

stomach ache.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, The purpose of this research is to investigate the efficiency of

River Tamarind leaves as a primary ingredient in making floor wax.

Specifically, This study will conclude:

1. What are the consequences of using River Tamarind leaves as an ingredient

in floor wax?

2. Which River Tamarind leaf variety, in terms of color, flavor, texture, shine, and

overall acceptance, can make a better floor wax?

3. Does River Tamarind floor wax considerably differ from commercial floor wax

when applied to a concrete surface?

Significance of the Study

The Results of this study could help benefit people in poverty, therefore

making them a Sustainable Source of floor wax using the common plant named

River Tamarind, it also helps people so that they will never buy Floor wax, make

their own River Tamarind floor wax, and sell the River Tamarind Floorwax and

make possible income from it, it will also enhance the involvement in the school

and people because they can make their own River Tamarind Floor wax with its

primary ingredient being found anywhere, making it cost-efficient. And lastly, this

could Motivate and challenge the school administration to share the Product and

Spread it to other people and it will become popular, they can make their own

floor wax made of River Tamarind for a low cost.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study is focused on engaging the use of River Tamarind (Leucaena

leucocephala) in the production floor wax. This will be conducted at the

Tantangan National High School from May-June 2023. The researchers will

collect River Tamarind (Leucaena leucocephala) leaves specifically at Tantangan

South Cotabato, which will be gathered randomly at the given area.

Theoretical Framework

River Tamarind Leaves have the ability to yield floor wax. It will be

assumed that in this study River Tamarind Leaves will be the independent

variable and the Production of Floorwax will be the dependent variable. It will

also be assumed that there will be intervening variables throughout the

experiment such as, the River Tamarind Leaves being Young or either Mature, or

the use of different ingredients.

Definition of Terms

River Tamarind (Leucaena leucocephala) - One of the trees with the fastest rate

of growth, and will be the primary ingredient in the production of floor wax.
Floor wax - dries quickly, is non-sticky, and buffs easily to a sheen while

providing interior timber floors, both new and recovered, with deep nurturing

protection.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In the Philippines, these trees are referred to as "ipil-ipil" in other terms

“river Tamarind” otherwise known as “Leucaena leucocephala” locally. The tree

is typically found in populated areas at low and medium altitudes, where it grows

prolifically and in great abundance. Since it was first brought from tropical

America many years ago, the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) of the

Department of Agriculture reports that it has spread over the entire tropics.
In the Philippines, ipil-ipil trees are frequently used in forestry and firewood

production. It is a well-liked cover crop and an effective "grub" killer. The bark of

the ipil-ipil tree has a great potential as a source of brown dye, and its seeds are

frequently used as a substitute for coffee.

Nparks.gov.sg ( V. Sakthivel and M. Vivekanandan 2022 ) stated that,

They are indigenous to terrestrial environments, primarily secondary rainforest,

coastal forest, riverine, grassland, savannah, scrubland, disturbed area, and

open ground. Tropical climate zones are their preferred geographical range.

They grow as small scrubby trees or huge leguminous thornless shrubs that

create thick stands with bushy crowns that can reach heights of 6 meters. Having

a lifespan of 20 to 40 years, it is rather brief. It was also discovered that their bark

has noticeable lenticels and is gray. Small, gray-green, bipinnate leaves that are

aromatic when crushed.

Floorwax benefits humans in numerous ways. Jan-Pro Cleaning &

Disinfecting stated that the benefits of waxing are protecting flooring from nicks,

scratches, marks, and spill stains to increase its durability. Additionally, waxing

helps floors shine which can open up a room and make it look more organized.

Additionally, it could make imperfections and grooves less noticeable, especially

on a wooden floor. In a business environment with high foot traffic, such as an

office, restaurant, hospital, or medical facility, waxed floors can give off a more

professional image and communicate that you are sincerely concerned with the

cleanliness of your workplace. There are also 2 types of floor wax which is

Liquid And Solid Paste wax. Liquid waxes are easy to apply, appropriate for use
on linoleum flooring, raw cork or wood surfaces, or both. While on the other

hand, Solid Paste wax generally takes longer to apply than liquid wax, but

provides a longer lifespan and yields a more smoother and deeper shine to

floors.

Harmful Chemical Components of Floorwax

Most commercial floor wax products, especially manufactured products,

generally consist of harmful chemical components and might cause sickness to

consumers.

treehugger.com (Larry West 2019) noted that, manufactured floorwax

consist of Cresol, which can affect the liver and kidneys if inhaled over an

extended period of time, another important element in floor wax that needs to be

avoided whenever possible is formaldehyde, which has been related to

everything from cancer to reproductive issues to asthma. Mainstream floor wax

also contains potentially harmful substances such nitrobenzene,

perchloroethylene, phenol, toluene, and xylene.

Future Expectations

The researchers expect that this study will help to create a floor wax with

its main ingredient River Tamarind that will reduce the Harmful Chemical
Components and to create a reliable, efficient and most importantly safe and

non-hazardous floorwax for everyday use.

As a result of the epicuticular waxes found in Ipil-Ipil leaves, which

may exist in great numbers. The smooth, concrete-cemented floor may then

shine whenever it is applied for this reason. In this regard, the researchers

hypothesized that wax-like materials and compounds identified in Ipil-Ipil leaves

may be used to make floor wax.

CHAPTER III

MYTHODOLOGY

Ingredients:

12 Juiced Ipil-Ipil Leaves

50g Paraffin Wax

250ml Mineral Oil

Equipment/Materials:

Gas or Electric Hob/Stove

Large Old Saucepan

Wooden Stirring Spoon or Hard Stirring Brush

Pouring Jug
Waxing Mop

Small Bucket (for dipping the mop into)

Clean Rags/Towels (preferably ones you don't mind getting spoiled)

Procedure/Method:

1. Gather all the required ingredients together and set them out so that they are

easily accessible and within your reach.

2. Turn on the hob or stove you are planning to use and gently heat the paraffin

wax until melted. Stir occasionally to avoid the wax sticking to the base of the

pan.

3. Carefully pour the mineral oil into your pan a bit at a time. Don't rush: Do this in

stages to avoid any overspills.

4. Add in the juiced Ipil-Ipil leaves. Again, do this in stages to avoid missing the

saucepan.

5. Stir the mixture together thoroughly and turn off the hob. Don't stop stirring,

though, as this will cause the mixture to set.

6. Pour the floor wax gently into the small bucket. Dip the mop into the bucket

and shake off excess liquid before gingerly applying to your floor. Leave for 30

minutes.

7. Buff the wax on your floor and then remove thoroughly, leaving it sparkling

clean with the effect of the ipil-ipil leaves at a fraction of the price normally spent

on commercial cleaners.
