The heart produces a pounding sound. It says, “Thud! Thud! Thud!” That
pounding sound is what we call a “heartbeat”. There are other things around us
beat regularly. An example of this is the clock. The ticking of the clock is
considered as a beat. The pounding of the heart and ticking of the clock
represent what a beat is.

REMEMBER

Beat is the life of music. It can be fast or slow, regular or uneven. This
regular pace of movement is called a steady beat. Steady beat is a repetitive
pulse that you can feel in songs, chants and rhymes. There is a musical element
related to beat, It is called rhythm. Rhythm is the regular repetition of sound
pattern. It is represented by a straight line.
Here are some things in our surroundings that produce a steady beat.

LET’S TRY IT

Stand straight and march around. Count 1,2,1,2 for the steps you make.
Read the rhyme and feel its beat. Clap your hands as you read the word with a
straight line under it.
