VDA - 6 Carbon and Its Compound

1) Ethanoic acid and ethanol react in the presence of sulfuric acid to form an ester called ethyl ethanoate. 2) Sodium hydrogen carbonate reacts with ethanoic acid to form sodium ethanoate salt and carbon dioxide gas. 3) Compound C (acetic acid) reacts with sodium metal to form sodium acetate salt and ethane gas, and it reacts with ethanol and acid to form the sweet-smelling ester methyl ethanoate.

ASSIGNMENT-6

(Carbon and Its compound)

1. A compound X is formed by the reaction of a carboxylic acid C2H4O2 and an alcohol in
presence of a few drops of H2SO4. The alcohol on oxidation with alkaline KMnO4
followed by acidification gives the same carboxylic acid as used in this reaction. Give the
names and structures of (a) carboxylic acid, (b) alcohol and (c) the compound X. Also
write the reaction.
2. What is the role of metal or reagents written on arrows in the given chemical reactions ?
3. A salt X is formed and a gas is evolved when ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogen
carbonate. Name the salt X and the gas evolved. Describe an activity and draw the
diagram of the apparatus to prove that the evolved gas is the one which you have named,
Also, write chemical equation of the reaction involved.
4. A compound C (molecular formula, C2H4O2) reacts with Na-metal to form a compound R
and evolves a gas which burns with a pop sound. Compound C on treatment with an
alcohol A in presence of an acid forms a sweet smelling compound S (molecular formula,
C3H6O3). On addition of NaOH to C, it also Identify C, R, A, S and write down the
reactions involved.
5. Draw the possible isomers of the compound with molecular formula C H 0 and also give
their electron dot structures.
6. An organic compound A on heating with concentrated H2SO4 forms a compound B
which on addition of one mole of hydrogen in presence of Ni forms a compound C. One
mole of compound C on combustion forms two moles CO2 and 3 moles of H2O. Identify
the compounds A, B and C and write the chemical equations of the reactions involved.
7. Look at Figure and answer the following questions
(a) What change would you observe in the calcium hydroxide solution taken in tube B ?
(b) Write the reaction involved in test tubes A and B respectively.
(c) If ethanol is given instead of ethanoic acid, would you expect the same change?
(d) How can a solution of lime water be prepared in the laboratory?
Answer Key

1. (i) Carboxylic acid having the M.F. C2H4O2 must be ethnic acid (acetic acid)
(ii) An alcohol which on oxidation with alkaline KMnO4 followed by acidification gives
ethanoic acid must be ethanol

(iii) Since compound (X) is formed by reaction of ethanoic acid with ethanol in presence
of a drops of conc. H2SO4, therefore, compound (X) must be an ester, i.e., ethyl ethanoate
and the reaction is called esterification reaction

2. (a)

(b)

(c)

3. (a)
Set up apparatus as shown in Fig. in the test tube place sodium bicarbonate instead of
sodium carbonate. Pass CO2 through freshly prepared lime water, it turns milky due to
the formation of insoluble calcium carbonate.
4.

The suggestion that the ester (S) is actually methyl ethanoate is supported by the
observation that it on treatment with NaOH gives the original acid, i.e., ethanoic acid ©
and the original alcohol, methanol (A).
5. In principle, as many as, seven isomers are possible. These are :

(i) (ii)

(iii) (iv)
(b) Cyclic isomers

(v) (vi)

(vii)
However, based upon the course content of class X, only first two isomers, i.e.,
propanone and propanil should be considered. Their electron dot structures are :
6. (i) Since compound C on combustion forms two moles of CO2 and 3 moles of H2O,
therefore, compound C must contain two carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms, Thus,
compound C must be C2H6 (ethane)

(ii) Since compound (c) is obtained by addition of 1 mole of H2 in presence of Ni to

compound (B), therefore
(B) Must be ethane

(iii) Since compound (B) is formed by heating compound (A) with conc. H2SO4,
therefore, compound (A) must be ethanol.

7. (a) When CO2 is passed through calcium hydroxide solution (taken in tube B), i.e., lime
water, it turns milky due to the formation of insoluble calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
(b)

(c) It ethanol is taken instead of ethanoic acid, no change will occur because ethanol is a
very weak acid and hence cannot decompose Na2CO3 to given CO2 gas

(d) Quick lime (CaO) is added to water in a test tube. Some of it will dissolve to form
calcium hydroxide (lime water) While majority of it remains suspended. Filter the
solution. The clear solution thus obtained is called lime water.
