A community, broadly speaking, is a group of people who interact with one another and who feel
connected to one another due to shared interests or traits.
A community is a group of people with a common goal and objective who live in a specific 9 geographic
region and have the potential to engage with one another (Dryer‘s den).
Any community ‘s ability to function depends on its members ‘shared ideals, standards,
communication, and supportive behaviors. Some communities may share practically everything, whereas
other communities (big, dispersed, and made up of individuals) may just share their involvement in
particular aims and common interests.
Geographic communities are those whose boundaries are determined mostly by geography. A
geographic community might be a city, town, or neighborhood, for instance. Geographically defined
communities are easy to mobilize for action and provide a clear target for the analysis of health needs that
serves as the foundation for planning health programs.
Another way to recognize a community is via a shared objective or interest. Even though they are
geographically dispersed, a group of people can come together as a shared interest community if they
share a common interest or objective. (For instance, a community of disabled people dispersed throughout
a big city might form as a result of a shared desire for better facilities for people in wheelchairs or other
disabilities.)
