1. A kite is at an angle of 32o to the horizontal and the string is 15.2 m long. What are the
horizontal and vertical components of the kite in the air?

x = 15.2 m * cos(32°)

cos(32°) ≈ 0.848

x ≈ 15.2 m * 0.848 ≈ 12.89 m

y = 15.2 m * sin(32°)

y ≈ 15.2 m * 0.529 ≈ 8.05 m

answer: x ≈ 12.89 m y ≈ 8.05 m

2. What is the sum of ⃗ B=1.5 ^x − 3.7 ^y ? What is ⃗

A=2.5 x^ + 4.1 ^y and ⃗ A−⃗
B?
Sum of A and B:
A + B = (2.5x + 4.1y) + (1.5x - 3.7y)
A + B = 2.5x + 1.5x + 4.1y - 3.7y
A + B = 4x + 0.4y

A - B = (2.5x + 4.1y) - (1.5x - 3.7y)

A - B = (2.5x - 1.5x) + (4.1y + 3.7y)
A - B = 1x + 7.8y

3. An airplane has an airspeed of 950 km/h due east. There is a crosswind blowing in a direction of
550 south of east at 85 km/h. Calculate the velocity of the airplane relative to the ground.
4. Jordan throws a ball out of a window with an initial speed of 22 m/s and it lands 38 m from
the building. How high is Jordan in the building?

time = 38 m / 22 m/s ≈ 1.73 s

height = (1/2) * 9.8 m/s^2 * (1.73 s)^2 ≈ 15.72 m

5. A deer jumps off a cliff and ends 15.0 m below. His take off speed is 4.9 m/s. How far from the
cliff does the deer land?

time = sqrt((2 * -15.0 m) / -9.8 m/s^2) ≈ 1.78 s

distance = 4.9 m/s * 1.78 s ≈ 8.72 m

6. A river is about 5.7 m wide. Suppose an athlete wants to jump “over the river” and leaps at
an angle of 35o with respect to the horizontal. What is the minimal initial speed that would
allow the athlete to clear the gap? How much time is the athlete in the air?

7. A ball is tossed up at a 40o at a speed of 12.5 m/s. How high does the ball travel?

H = v^2 * (sinA)^2 / 2g

H = 12.5^2 * sin40^2 / (2*9.81)

H = 3.29 m

8. A hunter is aiming at a squirrel in a tree. He is lying on the ground and the tree is 25 m away.
The squirrel is 12.5 m up the tree. If the time it takes for his bullet to hit the bird in the tree is
0.32 s, what is the angle the hunter is aiming at?

tan^-1(12.5/25)=26.56

9. In a 650 m stretch of a river, the speed of the current is 3.5 m/s. How long does a boat take
to finish the roundtrip (upstream and downstream) if the speed of the boat is 6.5 m/s relative
to the still water.

Vd=6.5+3.5=10m/s
Vu=6.5-3.5=3m/s

t=650/10+650/3≈ 280s
