L1.3 The Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system consists of ovaries, oviducts, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva. The ovaries contain ova and produce sex hormones. Follicular development begins prenatally, with primary follicles forming and later developing into secondary and tertiary follicles in cyclical patterns regulated by the hypothalamus-pituitary axis. Reproductive anatomy and cycles vary between monotocous and polytocous species.
