Lessons in Tackling Crime
cracking down on crime as they return to the city for the new term. Personal Safety Awareness Week, which starts on Monday 26 September at the Universitys Rose Bowl and Headingley Campus and is backed by the West Yorkshire Police, aims to raise awareness of personal and property crime among students and university staff and introduce ways to reduce the chance of becoming a victim. Students will be offered advice on electronic property marking, bike security, home and accommodation safety, personal awareness and the Amber Taxi initiative to allow students to use their student card as temporary payment for a taxi journey. Brian Bolton, Head of Security at Leeds Metropolitan, said: We work closely with a large number of external organisations to ensure that relevant information and advice is available to send out to all our students and staff. We have developed a number of awareness programmes for this academic year to advise on personal safety, support proactive crime reduction strategies and help community partners create a safe environment in and outside Leeds Met. Inspector Ian OBrien heads the North West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team, which covers the universities and the main areas where students live. He commented: We appreciate that crime prevention might not be the topic at the forefront of most new students minds but we hope to use the week to
get as many as we can to understand how taking a few simple precautions to protect their homes, their property and themselves will leave them free to make the most of their time in the city. Sandy Domingos-Shipley, Organiser of the event, added: Together with a number of external partners and our own dedicated Student Liaison Officer we are working in adopting a pattern of attitudes and behaviours that can help reduce the threat of crime to individuals and communities and enhance their sense of safety and security. This years Personal Safety Awareness Week is the first of many initiatives Leeds Met Security are launching together with our partners to work towards achieving our goal. The event is being run in collaboration with West Yorkshire Police, Safer Leeds, British Transport Police, British Waterways, Halfords, Amber Taxis, Knowledge and CASAC. It will run at the Universitys Rose Bowl building on Monday 26, Thursday 29 and Friday 30 September and at the Headingley Campus on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 September, from 10am to 2pm each day.
