1 How to Digitize Patterns

Notice: Please pay close attention to any Warning Messages there may be. SoftFashion had
developed and improved Warning Messages on StyleCAD’s specific functions to avoid
possible user mistakes and other human errors that can cause substantial amount of
production time delay and cost.

Step 1: Place a set of patterns on the digitizer board using small pieces of tapes and make sure that
the entire
pattern set is placed within the boundaries of the board. The digitizer board boundaries
are clearly marked on all four-corners of the board.

Step 2: Start the program. Double click PDS Grading StyleCAD icon from the Desk top
Screen.

or

This icon includes the Digitizing program and you must start it from here. The
[PDS/Grading] window appears:

3

Step 3: Start a New Style By clicking on the New Style icon.

or A New
Style can be
selected
from File
pull down
menu.

The New Style dialog box appears:

A Dialog box is simply the way you can communicate with your program; computer
processes and remembers your input data.

Step 4: Type in a new style name. In the New Style Name box, enter a name for your pattern;
usually style numbers are used. For example, 2241, Sears301, etc.

Step 5: Select a folder. Double click [ .. ], just left of the New Style Name box. This should list
all of the folders that can be used for this program. The [C:\work\styles\] folder is the
root directory and you cannot access or create folders beyond the \styles\ folder. You
can always create or delete new/existing folders inside of the \styles\ folder as needed.
Double click on folder name that you want to open. Only the selected folder name should
appear in the Folder for New Style box, and the rest of the list disappears. Then click
[OK].

Notice: Folders are very useful when you need to separate different styles into different groups.

Step 6: Choose sizes. The [Available Size] dialog box appears:

All currently available sizes will appear in the Available Size dialog box and you should
see Base Size on the bottom of the dialog box. Click on the Change Size button to
make any changes. Click OK. The voice activated respond system will sound “Done”.
The style name appears in the Title Bar.

Step 7: Click on Digitizer from the Tool pull-down menu or select the Digitizer icon:

5
StyleCAD Digizing 7.0 Manual

The digitizer window appears:

Step 8: Enter a unique pattern name (15 characters max.) in the Pattern Name box. It’s good
practice to use the default pattern names; 01 at start, then make changes as they are needed
after you have digitized all of the patterns. Patterns are named automatically starting from
01, 02, 03, and so on…

Step 9: Select a group name in the Marking Group. Self/ Fusing/ Contrast/ Lining. Users can
use the default settings (Self) to begin with, then make changes as needed after they have
digitized all of the patterns.

Step 10: Digitize the patterns using digitizer cursor. The digitizer cursor has four-buttons and each
button has different functions. These buttons are supported by the sound system that
actually tells you what you’ve just done. Once you get used to the sound support, you
wouldn’t even have to look at the computer screen to confirm your digitized entries.

6
StyleCAD Digizing 7.0 Manual

The Basic Digitizing Concept:

Step 11: Digitize the Grain Line. To create a grain line, press [A] from the left, and then press [A]
on the right. The Grain Line appears on the screen supported by a distinctive sound for
the Grain Line. Make the Grain Line as long as possible to make the digitized pattern
more accurate.

Step 12: Digitize a pattern (clock wise). This is usually done from the lower left-hand corner of the
pattern. You must digitize all of the patterns clock wise, otherwise the notches will
be reversed. Once you’ve digitized the whole perimeter of the pattern up to the starting
point, press [E] to Close Pattern or to End it (Do not re-digitize the initial point).

7
StyleCAD Digizing 7.0 Manual

If there is no Bias/Fabric Line or Drill/Punch Holes, then press [E] once-again to

save the pattern; this will place the digitized pattern inside of the Grading Window in the
upper rack.

If it is a Fold/Mirror Pattern, then click [Fold Line] from the digitizer menu panel, and
then select the Fold Line (any point on the Fold Line) with digitizer cursor [A]. The
selected line should turn into red-segmented line, indicates that it is now a Fold/Mirror
Line.

An automatically selected name will appear in the digitizer window; if the first one was
A01, then the next one should be A02, and so on… You can always change it as needed
and move on to the next pattern to digitize.

If it is a Fold Pattern, then it is recommended to digitize the Grain Line over the Fold
Line to make it more accurate.

When you make any mistakes during digitizing process, press [U] button on the digitizer
cursor or select [UNDO] on the digitizer menu panel to erase.

If you want to erase the whole pattern, then click [Erase Pattern] from [Digitizer
Window].

Step 13: Press [E] to save. Close the digitizer window once you’re finished with digitizing process.

4 Paste Pattern
The Paste Pattern feature in the digitizing allows the user to digitize a pattern that is too
large for the digitizer board. The pasting operation can be performed multiple times, so
there is no physical limitation to the size of a pattern that can be digitized.

Step 1: Place the first part of the large pattern to be digitized on the digitizing board. Digitize the
first part as you would a normal pattern that’s shape starts with the grain line. Close the
pattern using the “End” digitizer mouse button. Any internal elements (such as drill
holes) belonging to the first part should be entered now.

The Joining Side

Step 2: Select the Paste Pattern command from the digitizer board menu. Voice feedback
for the command is given at this time. Using either the “Intermediate” or
“Grading” digitizer mouse button, click on the side of the pattern that will be
joined by the Paste Pattern operation. It is important to note that the joining side
should be a straight line (i.e. surrounded by 2 grading points). You will notice in
the digitizer window that the pattern is open where the joining side is.

16

17
StyleCAD Digizing 7.0 Manual

Place the second part of the large pattern to be digitized on the digitizing board.
Digitize the second part in clockwise direction starting from the joining side of
the second part of the pattern. This is required so that StyleCAD knows where to
join the 2 parts and to determine any rotational adjustment that needs to be made.
You will notice that when the first 2 points defining the joining side are entered,
the pattern does not add any new points, but it instead rotates (if the rotation
amount is noticeable) the first part to be aligned with the second part. Any new
points will be added to the first part. Close the pattern by using the “End”
digitizer mouse button. Add any internal elements (such as drill holes) belonging
to the second part.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 if multiple pastings are required.

5 Workflow Enhancements

5.1 Rule ID Entry

After entering a grading point, a rule ID may be entered. If the rule is found after each
character, the grading data is immediately applied. The user can use the BACKSPACE key
to delete the previously-entered point. In order for this to work the rule libarary must
already be selected. The user can select the rule library from the grading panel.

5.2 Force Grain Line Inside Option

The "Force Grain Line Inside" option controls whether the grain line is forced inside
the pattern outline when it touches it. If the user does not want this automatic
placement of the grain line, turn the option off.
