MATHEMATICS VI
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of rate and speed, and of
area and surface area of plane and solid/space figures.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to apply knowledge of speed, area, and
surface area of plane and solid/space figures in mathematical
problems and real-life situations.
I. Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson the students should be able to
Calculates speed, distance and time M6ME-IIIg-17
A. Preliminary Activity
Greetings
Prayer
Attendance
Drill: Directions: Evaluate the following expressions to find the value of x. Write
your answers on a sheet of paper.
1. 8x = 64
2. x – 24 = 12 + 4
3. 5x – 12 = 13
4. 10x + 2 = 5x + 27
5. 5x – 8 = 15 + 22
1. a = rs 4. 9a = rs
2. a = 𝑟/𝑠 5. 𝑎/2 = 𝑟/𝑠
3. 5a = rs
Let the pupils analyze the problem. Then find the answer.
• To find the total distance traveled, we simply multiply the given speed and time.
Distance = speed x time
= 55 x 4
= 220 km Answer: We traveled 220 kilometers
Discuss the relationship between speed, distance and time can be expressed in the
ff. equations:
An easy way to remember the distance, speed and time equations is to put the
letters into a triangle. The triangles will help you remember these 3 rules:
Example 2: Calculate the distance that you will travel if you will drive for 3.5
hours at 75km/h.
Solution: D = S x T
Example 2: A car travels 120 km in 2 hours; find the speed of the car.
Example 3: Samuel can type 975 words in 25 minutes. Calculate his typing speed
in:
A. words per minute B. words per hour
A. Typing Speed
Solution:

Generalization:
What is Speed?
Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to “how fast an object is moving
What is Distance?
Distance is the total length between two positions.
What is Time?
Time is the quantity measured or measurable period during which an
action, process, or condition exists or continues.
Application:
Directions: Complete the table below. Write your answers on your Math NB.
No. Speed Distance Time
1 45kph 135 km
2 100 m 5 seconds
3 90 kph 3 hours
4 350 m 35 seconds
5 56 kph 7 hours
Evaluation
Directions: Choose the letter that corresponds to the correct answer.
1. A typhoon is moving at the speed of 245km per hour. How many kilometers will it
travel in 9 hours?
a. 2005km b. 2025km c. 2205km d. 2502km
2. A car travelling at the rate of 86kph. How many hours will it take for the car to
travel 212.5 km?
1. It takes bus A 2hours to travel 155km. It takes bus B 3 hours to travel 160
kilometers. Which bus is travelling faster?
2. At 5:30 p.m., Mr. and Mrs. Martinez left their offices and drove back home,
travelling in the same direction. He drove at the rate of 80kph. His wife drove at
the rate of 60kph. At what time did Mr. Martinez overtake his wife if his office
was 15km away from Mrs. Martinez’s office?
