Exercise 3

This document contains an exercise on dynamic modeling of separately excited DC motors presented by Eng. Rania Hammad. It includes 5 problems analyzing DC motors and generators using differential equations and Laplace transforms. The problems determine motor/generator speed, current, voltage, and torque as functions of time given parameters like resistance, inductance, inertia, applied voltages, and loads. Steady state solutions are also calculated.

Problem (2)
A separately excited DC motor has Ra=0.4 Ω, La=0, and kv= 2V/rad/sec.
Motor is connected to a load whose torque is proportional to the speed (T α ω).
J = Jmotor+ Jload= 2.5 kg.m2 and B = Bmotor + Bload= 0.25 kg.m/s.
Assume that the rotor speed was 45 rad/sec by applying 100 V at the armature
terminals, while the field current is maintained constant at its rated value. If a
voltage of 200 V is suddenly applied across the motor armature terminals.
1. Obtain an expression for the motor speed as a function of time.
2. Determine the steady state speed.
3. Determine the induced emf. and the developed torque as a function of time.

Problem (3)
A separately excited DC motor has the following parameters:
Ra=0.5 Ω , La=0 ,B=0 , J=2.5 Kg.𝑚2
The motor generates an open circuit armature voltage of 220 V at 2000 r.p.m. when the
field current is 1 A. If the motor shaft is connected to a constant load of 25 N.m, when
the armature terminals are suddenly connected to a 220 V DC source and the field
current constant at 1 A.
Determine the speed and armature current as a function of time.

Problem (4)
A 230 V DC series motor, running at 150 rad/sec. and takes 20 A from the supply.
The armature and field resistances are 𝑅𝑎 + 𝑅𝑓𝑠 =1 Ω. The total moment of inertia J=
5.4 Kg.𝑚2 and B=0.02 N.m.sec./rad.
a. Calculate the rotational mutual inductance 𝑀𝑎𝑓 and the load torque.
b. If the supply voltage is suddenly reduced to 220 V with the load torque remaining
constant, find the speed as a function of time.

𝑅𝑎 = 0.25 Ω, 𝐿𝑎 = 0.02 H, 𝑅𝑓 = 100 Ω, 𝐿𝑓 = 25 H, 𝐾𝑣 = 100 V/A at rated speed.
Solve the following cases:
a. The generator is driven at rated speed and the field voltage 200 V is suddenly
applied to the field winding.
Determine the armature generated voltage as a function of time and the steady state
voltage.
b. The generator is driven at rated speed and a load consisting of 𝑅𝐿 =1 Ω and 𝐿𝐿 =
0.15 H in series is connected to the armature terminals. A field voltage 𝑉𝑓 =200 V is
suddenly applied to the field winding.
Determine the armature current as a function of time.
