14 - Fuel Systems

American Airlines continues to experience premature fuel probe failures on its A321 fleet less than 2 years old, requiring painful tank entries and long ground times. While working with Airbus and Collins, the original equipment manufacturer, to address the issue, some failures of the updated probe design have already occurred. The summary requests an update on root cause investigations from Airbus and Collins.

AAL continues to suffer from premature fuel quantity failures on our A321CEO and A321NEO fleets. American
has been working closely with Airbus and Collins on the topic and has even begun a maintenance program
change to replace fuel probes every 40 months. Collins began delivering an updated fuel probe (under the same
MPN) in 2019. Reliability on the updated fuel probes appears to be better than the original, but some failures have
already been documented.

Several of our 2-year-old A321Neos are already experiencing fuel probe related failures resulting in painful tank
entries and extended out of service time.

Have other operators experienced similar premature probe failures?

Can Airbus and Collins please provide an update on where they are in determining a root cause?

Since Feb 2020, AFI has noticed a lack of information in ONTIC CMM 28-48-06 rev 4. Circuit display board
assembly schematic and wiring diagram are missing for MPN 6026-03. This data is available for other
MPN 6026-01 and -02.

Ontic announced a new revision several times, which should include the wiring diagram. As of today, we are still
waiting for it.

Can we expect a new CMM revision with the schematic and wiring diagram?

Operators, Ontic and Boeing comment please.

Air France is facing supply issue for display assembly and boards.

For example, Display board MPN 101037-70 and 101037-80, IC MPN 100-000-303-001, and labels. Ontic and
Aviall seem not able to deliver in time.

Does Ontic and Aviall have a plan to improve the situation?

76 SB Reliability 6026-01 /-02/-03 IRP Ontic B777 28 AFR-KLM AFR

Air France has observed a reliability drop in 2020: MTBUR from 45464 to 15354 flight hours. The main removals
are from inoperative switches (50%). Thus, main findings are replacing the switches.

Air France has also observed that SB 6026-28-714 and -717 do not improve reliability. SBs implementation is
around 50%

Is there a new switch design in progress?

Air France expects a new SB for a better switch reliability? If Yes, when will be the new SB issued?

Other Operators, Ontic, Aviall, and Boeing comment, please.

Issue is the same as last year AMC Discussion Item 20-174).

In the Air France Shop, we noticed poor reliability of circuit integrated IC4 and/or CPU/PSU board assy.
Observed MTBUR is 9522 FH for IGO fleet and 4776 FH for CEBU fleet (GMTBUR: 12000 – MTBUR AIR
FRANCE 215000).

Ontic had to investigate and update Air France by the end of November 2020.

Can Ontic provide an update and delays for this issue?

Other Operators, Ontic and Airbus comment please.
