The importance of English

We may say that anyone who speaks English belongs to the English speech community.
We can classify the speakers into two groups: one in which the speakers use English as
their native language, the other in which the speakers learn English as a second language
for the purposes of education, commerce, and so on. The former group would obviously
include people in England, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. The
latter group would include, among many others, English speakers in India, Kenya, the
Philippines and Singapore. However, not all these countries use English for the same
purpose or to the same extent. English serves as a functional alternative language in
several areas of public activity for the many nations of the world which use it as an
international second language. Because of its widespread use geographically, and because
of the large number of people who speak it, it has been adopted as the language of
aviation and air traffic. The acceptance of English as a language of international
diplomacy is evidenced by its adoption as one of the official languages of the United
Nations. English is also the language of the majority of research and published materials
