Objectives
Objectives
1. To be able to create a rollercoaster made out of paper and tape with full features.
2. Let the marble be able to finish the whole track without skipping/falling.
3. Be able to understand the concept of speed, velocity, potential energy, etc.
Materials:
- Paper folder - Ruler - Paper
- Scissors - Pencil
- Tape - Cardboard
- Marble - Bond paper
Procedure:
1. We gathered the materials needed.
2. We cut the folders into pieces with the length of about 30 cm and a width of roughly 3
cm (serving as the straight tracks).
3. The excess straight tracks were then used to create loops and a hill by cutting the
sides, reforming and or shaping, and taping.
4. After doing all the features needed, we started taping them on the wall.
5. We adjusted the tracks so that the marble could be able to get enough speed to go
through the loops and hill.
6. Lastly, we made a small box using a paper, then placed on the ground to serve as the
marble catcher.
Documentation:
Data Gathered:
Trial 1: 42.45 seconds
Trial 2: 36.03 seconds
Trial 3: 35.63 seconds
Conclusion:
Achieving an average time of more than 20 second in finishing the ride, we concluded
a few reasons why.
Roller coasters rely on gravitational potential energy, which they acquire by being
initially sent upwards. That is why we started our rollercoaster in high and traight tracks -
only slightly slanted, this conserved the energy of the marble, as the elevation, or height off
the ground, of an item causes potential energy to be "stored". Soon enough, potential energy
is transformed into kinetic energy, or the energy of motion, as the roller coaster starts to go
down, because of this, the marble was able to surpass the first loop, as it slides to another
slanted track, it gained again potential energy before entering a funner. The coaster gradually
slows down as some of the energy is also converted to heat as a result of air resistance and
friction with the track. The process keeps on as the coaster travels loops, hills, funnels, and
turns until it finally comes to an end.
