Year 10 science Topics for exam

The following are the topics that are on the exam. You need to make sure that you know
about each of these and are able to answer the revision questions on the next page.

Atomic Diagram for structure of atoms (protons, neutrons, electrons, nucleus, shells)

Atomic number, Atomic mass number.

Calculating number of neutrons using atomic number and atomic mass number.

Ion charges (using periodic table, group 1 is 1+, etc.)

Writing chemical formula and names (both ionic and covalent) and using polyatomic ion table.

Bonding – ionic and covalent. (need to figure out type of bonding, and properties e.g. ionic are brittle
and be able to explain why)

Word equations (e.g Hydrogen gas + oxygen gas  water)

Balancing chemical reactions

Periodic table trends and why (reactivity increase down LHS, decrease down RHS, far RHS column
unreactive(inert) due to full shell, period are the rows and groups are the columns)

Types of reactions (Synthesis, decomposition, combustion, acid+base, single replacement, double

replacement, exothermic, endothermic)

Reaction rates (temperature, concentration, surface area, catalyst, more reactive element)

Justified hypothesis and Method – be able to write a justified hypothesis and a method for an
experiment.

Interpret data – able to identify patterns and trends in data.

Note: I recommend you go through each of the topics, and tick them off once you are good with it.
Maybe even use a colour code? (green awesome, yellow meh, pink/red oh noooo)
Structure of atoms (protons, neutrons, electrons, nucleus)

1) Draw the structure of an atom, include protons, neutrons, electrons, nucleus.

Calculating number of neutrons using atomic number and atomic mass number.

2) Find the number of neutrons for the following isotopes.

Hydrogen-2 (atomic number = 1, atomic mass number = 2)

Uranium-235 (atomic mass number =235)

Ion charges (using periodic table)

3) What is the charge of the following ions

Lithium, Sodium, Magnesium, Oxygen, Carbon, Nitrogen, Fluorine

Writing chemical formula and names (both ionic and covalent)

4) Write the names of the following chemicals (remember to use a poly atomic ion table, and
need to know if it is ionic or covalently bonded)

NaCl, NaOH, Be3(PO4)2, NCl3, SF6

Bonding – ionic and covalent. (need to figure out type of bonding, and properties e.g. ionic are brittle
and be able to explain why)

5) A certain substance is very hard and can easily scratch wood, yet when tapped with a
hammer the substance shattered. What type of bonding would this exhibit?

Word equations (e.g Hydrogen gas + oxygen gas  water)

6) Write word equations for the following situations

a) Eggs, flour , milk and sugar are mixed together and cooked to form a cake.

b) Magnesium and chlorine gas is combined to form magnesium chloride.

c) 20g of sodium burns in air (reacting with oxygen) to form sodium oxide.

d) Hydrogen peroxide decomposes into water and oxygen gas.

Balancing chemical reactions

7) Go to http://funbasedlearning.com/ or https://education.jlab.org/elementbalancing/
(elearn – balancing equations document)

Periodic table trends and why (increase down LHS, decrease down RHS, far RHS column unreactive
due to full shell)

8) Suggest a more reactive element that

a) Sodium

b) Bromine

9) Why would a person use Argon gas to stop something reacting with air?

Types of reactions (Synthesis, decomposition, combustion, acid+base, single replacement, double

replacement, exothermic, endothermic)

10) Identify the type of reactions for the following equations:

a. NaBr + Ca(OH)2  CaBr2 + NaOH

b. NH3 + H2SO4  (NH4)2SO4

c. C5H9O + O2  CO2 + H2O

d. Pb + H3PO4  H2 + Pb3(PO4)2

Reaction rates (temperature, concentration, surface area)

11) Would the following increase or decrease the reaction rate?

a) Heating the reaction

b) Grinding the solid into a powder first then reacting it.

c) Doing the experiment in a fridge

d) Reducing the concentration of the acid.

e) Increasing the concentration of the acid, heating the container, and grinding the solids
into a powder.
Justified Hypothesis and Method

12) Write a method for an experiment testing influences of changing temperature on reaction
rate.
