1.2 About this guide

WinScope1000 is a PC tool to be used for monitoring, archiving, and viewing trends of controller variables. It
enables fast and convenient supervision of variables over time and therefore makes it easy to adjust regulator
parameters for optimum performance. WinScope1000 includes a highly customizable charting tool.

1.3 Controller connections

WinScope1000 uses the Communication Server component to connect to controllers. This supports direct
connection by USB, RS232/485, Ethernet and AirGate connections. For a list of supported controllers see
Supported Controllers on page 32.

General security recommendations and set of measures
1. Production mode
Disable production mode BEFORE the controller is put into regular operation.
2. User accounts
Change password for the existing default administrator account or replace that account with a
completely new one BEFORE the controller is put into regular operation mode.
Do not leave PC tools (e.g. InteliConfig) unattended while a user, especially administrator, is logged in.
3. AirGate Key
Change the AirGate Key BEFORE the device is connected to the network.
Use a secure AirGate Key – preferably a random string of 8 characters containing lowercase,
uppercase letters and digits.
Use a different AirGate Key for each device.
4. MODBUS/TCP
The MODBUS/TCP protocol (port TCP/502) is an instrumentation protocol designed to exchange data
between locally connected devices like sensors, I/O modules, controllers etc. By it's nature it does not
contain any kind of security – neither encryption nor authentication. Thus it is intended to be used only
in closed private network infrastructures.
Avoid using MODBUS/TCP in unprotected networks (e.g. Internet).

WinScope1000 Global Guide 5

5. SNMP
The SNMP protocol (port UDP/161) version 1 and version 2 are not encrypted. They are intended to be
used only in closed private network infrastructures.
Avoid using SNMP v1 and v2 in unprotected networks (e.g. Internet).

WinScope1000 Global Guide 11

The site connection tab allows you to connect to multiple controllers. You can add as many controllers as you
want, but you can only connect to a maximum of 32. Only the controllers with a check next to their name are
connected. In the image above Controller One is checked and Controller Two is not.
You can edit the connection details by double-clicking on the connection or by selecting the connection and
clicking the edit connection button on the connection toolbar. Because the site can have multiple connections
there are more options for working with them, see Working with connections on page 12.
In the example above, two channels are linked to Controller One and one channel is linked to Controller Two.
You can edit channels by double-clicking on them or selecting them and clicking the edit channel button on
the channel toolbar, see Working with channels on page 14.
When the Site connection tab is selected, when you click the Open connection button on the form, or on the
toolbar, or select the Connection → Open connection option from the menu, the selected controllers in the
Site connection will be opened.
The menu options Connection → Load site connection and Connection → Save site connection allow you to
load and save site connection definitions.
The menu options File → Load project and File → Save project allow you to load and save the quick and site
connections together, including scoped data.

3.4 Working with connections

You can edit a connection by double-clicking on it or by selecting it and pressing the edit connection button.
This opens the connection form where the connection parameters for a controller are defined.

Image 3.4 Working with connections

First we choose the method of connection: USB, AirGate, Ethernet or Serial link.

Note: In this example, Ethernet is selected. Depending on the selection, the connection parameters will
change.

WinScope1000 Global Guide 12

When the connection is configured, click "OK" to save your changes. Click "Cancel" to abandon your
changes.

The Quick connection tab has one fixed connection, but in the Site connection tab you can have one or more.
The connection toolbar lets you work with them.

Add a new connection

Delete the selected connection(s) – the linked channels will be deleted too

Copy the selected connection(s) to a new connection(s)

Edit the selected connection

Move the selected connection up

Move the selected connection down

Check the selected connection(s)

Uncheck the selected connection(s)

When you click the "Open connection" button, all the checked connections will be opened.
You can create as many connections as you want, but you can only open a maximum of 32, so only a
maximum of 32 can be checked. We do not recommend trying to connect to 32 controllers!

WinScope1000 Global Guide 13

If a connection cannot be opened, the connection colour will change to red, and will show "(error)"

The messages dialog will also open and show any messages relating to the error.

If the connection is opened successfully, it will change to green and will show "(connected)".

Note that if the connection is selected, it will appear blue, since the selection highlight colour blue overrides
the status colours red or green. But the "(error)" or "(connected)" text will be visible.

3.5 Working with channels

Each channel defines a variable to be monitored. Channels are linked to connections and appear directly
below the connection they relate to. To edit a channel, double-click on it, or select it and click the edit channel
button. If no channels are defined, click the add channel button.

Image 3.5 Channel toolbar

The channel toolbar lets you work with channels.

Add a new channel to the selected connection

Delete the selected channel(s) – the linked channels will be deleted too

Copy the selected channel(s) to a new connection(s)

Edit the selected channel

Move the selected channel up within its connection

Move the selected channel down within its connection

Check the selected channel(s)

Uncheck the selected channel(s)

Only the checked channels for connected controllers are scoped. A maximum of 32 channels can be scoped,
so a maximum of 32 channels (for all connections) can be checked.
The column headings at the top of the grid apply to the channels. You can resize the columns as required.

WinScope1000 Global Guide 14

Some columns, when shrunk, will switch to using abbreviated headings.

You can change the checkbox settings without opening the channel detail form, but for all others you need to
open the Edit channel form.

3.5.1 Editing a Channel

Image 3.6 Channel editing overview

WinScope1000 Global Guide 15

Controller
Channels belong to controllers, and here you can change which controller the channel belongs to by selecting
it from the drop-down list.

If you are in Quick Connection mode, only one connection is allowed.

Controlled variable
These settings define the variable we want to monitor. It is important to set the details correctly so that
WinScope1000 can interpret the data received from the controller correctly.

The easiest way to set the details is to click on the More options button. If the connection to the controller is
open, then the "Select com. Object" dialog will appear and you can select the value or setpoint you want to
monitor. When you click "OK", all the controlled variable settings will be filled in.
If the connection is not open, you will be given the chance to select an offline archive from which to read the
value and setpoint details. Make sure you select the right archive for the controller!

WinScope1000 Global Guide 16

If you cannot use either method above, you can enter the details manually.

Field Description
Com. object The communication object number.
Data len The length of the data in bytes.
Decimals The number of decimal places (for numeric data).
Value The data represents a numeric value.
Binary The data represents a binary value.
Format
The data represents a string value eg Engine State has values "Init", "Not
Stringlist
ready", "Ready" and so on.
Name The name of the channel, usually the name of the com. object.
Dim The dimensions used to measure the value.
Signed numeric values can be negative or positive.
Signed
Unsigned numeric values can only be positive.
If the format is binary, you can specify which bit of the data you want to monitor.
Bit index enabled
When this box is checked, you can set the Bit index.
If the format is binary, you can specify which bit of the data you want to monitor.
Bit index
When Bit index enabled is checked, you can set the Bit index.

WinScope1000 Global Guide 17

Curve
The curve settings control how the data is plotted on the chart.

Field Description
Enter the maximum value for the variable, and it will be scaled so it appears at the 100 position
High
on the Y-Axis.
Offset Shift the value on the Y-Axis by this amount.
Enter the minimum value for the variable, and it will be scaled so it appears at the 0 position on
Low
the Y-Axis.
Color Select a colour for the line on the chart.

Limits
WinScope1000 can scope in either manual or automatic mode. In automatic mode you must define triggers to
start and stop scoping, and this is where you do that.

For more information see Scoping data on page 20.

Data interpolation and plotting

These values also relate to how we plot the data we receive on the chart.

When we are scoping we define a fixed period for reading values, for example every 100 ms. However,
controllers do not always return values at the exact requested interval, they may be a little early or late. So we
interpolate the real values to estimate the value at the requested interval.
For continuous numeric values, this is usually the desired setting. However, for discrete values like binary and
stringlist, it makes no sense to try and interpolate so this value should be unchecked and disabled.
Similarly, when we are scoping continuous numeric values, we usually connect each data point with a straight
line because it is implied that when the value went from 50 to 100 it went through every value in between. But

WinScope1000 Global Guide 18

for discrete values like binary or stringlist types, there are no in between values, so we draw a straight vertical
line from value A to value B.
The chart below shows a continuous value in blue using straight line plotting, and a binary discrete value in
red that has straight line plotting unchecked giving the stepped appearance.

WinScope1000 Global Guide 19

4 Scoping data
4.1 Scoping options 20
4.2 Period 21
4.3 Normal scoping 22
4.4 Automatic scoping 22

6 back to Table of contents

When you have defined your connections and channels, you can start scoping data. But first there are some
other settings to check.

4.1 Scoping options

From the main menu, select Scope → Options.

4.1.1 Data capacity

Here you can set the maximum number of samples you want to scope, either as the number of samples, or as
time in seconds. The time in seconds is calculated based on the currently selected period. If the period is
1000 ms then 100 samples will take 100s, but if the period is 100 ms then 100 samples will take just 10 s.
The total capacity is based on the number of selected channels. There is a fixed amount of memory available
for scoping, and each point requires a small amount of memory. The more channels there are, the fewer
points available for each one.
When you start scoping, the number of selected channels will be checked, and if necessary, the capacity for
each channel reduced.
The circular data buffer option can be used to continuously monitor the last N samples or N seconds of data. If
you set the capacity to 100 s and check the circular data-buffer option, then when 100 s of data has been
collected, the following data will start to overwrite the data starting from the beginning.

WinScope1000 Global Guide 20

4.1.2 General

When the "Clear data on start scope" option is selected, whenever you start scoping, all existing data is
erased. If you uncheck this option, when you start scoping, data will be added to any existing data.
If "Prompt to save data before deleting" is selected, WinScope1000 will ask you before automatically deleting
data, and will give you the chance to save the data.
If "Prompt to save data before Period change" is selected, if you change the scoping period WinScope1000
will ask you before deleting data, and will give you the chance to save the data.
The "Alllow advanced chart settings" option is not available for all types of licence. If this option is available
and checked, the advanced settings button will appear on the Chart toolbar, for more information see
Charting on page 23.

4.2 Period
From the main menu, select Scope → Period or click the button on the main toolbar.

Here you set how often you want WinScope1000 to read data from the controllers. If you are looking at rapid
changes in data, you should set the period to match. But the more controllers you are scoping, the more
difficult it will be to scope all the controllers in a short time interval. If you have many connected controllers, or
the connection to the controllers is slow, you may need to increase the period.
Be aware that when you load saved data, for example from an SDT file, the period will be automatically set to
match the period of the data in the SDT file.

WinScope1000 Global Guide 21

4.3 Normal scoping
To start scoping in normal mode, click the button on the main toolbar. If it is not already open, the Chart
window will be opened, and scoping will begin. Depending which option is selected in general options,
existing data might be automatically cleared when you start scoping.

To stop scoping, click the button.

When scoping is started and stopped a vertical line with a stamp is added to the chart, for more information
see Stamps on page 25.

4.4 Automatic scoping

It is possible to configure scoping to start and stop automatically based on the value of a channel or channels.
For numeric values, you can define when to start and stop scoping based on when the value crosses a certain
threshold. In the example below, scoping will start when the value rises above 50. You can also define when
scoping will stop.

For binary values, the limits are defined slightly differently.

It is not possible to define limits for stringlist data types.

If you selected the "Show limit in chart" option for the limits, a dotted line will show the limit on the chart.

To start automatic scoping, click the button on the main toolbar. Scoping will start in paused mode, and
will start when the limits are met. The button is only enabled when limits have been defined.
When scoping is started and stopped automatically a stamp is added to the chart, for more information see
Stamps on page 25.

If you click the button, normal scoping will start, and the limits will be ignored.

To stop scoping, click the button.

5.1 Axes
The X-axis shows elapsed time, and the caption shows the real time that scoping started. If you start and stop
scoping either manually or automatically the elapse and real time may not be accurate.
Click the MS button to toggle the time format between hours, minutes, seconds (H:MM:SS) and minutes,
second, milliseconds (M:SS:MSS).
The Y-axis shows each value scaled according to the settings for that channel. In the above example, the sine
value varies from -128 to +128 but -128 is scaled to 0 on the Y-axis and +128 is scaled to 100. By scaling all
the channels, they can be displayed on a common axis.
However, if you select the Sine channel by clicking on it in the legend you will see the Y-axis changes to show
the actual Sine values and the Y-axis is colored blue to match the plot line color. See Legend for an example.
Click the button to show the individual y-axes for each channel instead of the scaled y-axis.

To adjust the axes settings, click the button. The following dialog appears, where you can change the
range of each axis and the default time format for the X-axis.

To reset the axes settings to their default value, click the button.

5.2 Legend
The legend can be toggled on and off by the button.
As well as providing information about the channels, the legend can be used to select a channel which is
necessary when using certain chart tools.
Click on an item in the legend to select the channel. The plot for the channel will appear thicker, and the Y-
Axis for the channel will be displayed using the same color as the plot.
Double-click on an item in the legend to hide the plot line. Double-click again to make it visible.

5.3 Stamps
Stamps or time stamps appear as vertical lines on the chart and mark when certain actions occurred. Each
stamp has a colored box on it, and you can click on the box to see more details about the stamp.

Box Description
Shows when scoping was started or stopped, in manual or automatic mode.
Shows when a limit for automatic scoping was reached.
Shows when a setpoint value was changed, for more information see Setpoints window on
page 29.

WinScope1000 supports the saving and loading of various file types. For more information see Main Menu
and Toolbar on page 9.

8.1 WinScope1000 Project Files (WPR)

WinScope1000 Project Files include connection and channel details for the quick and site connections, plus
scoped data. They are a snapshot of the current state of WinScope1000, combining the QCON, CON and
SDT file types.

8.2 Connection Files (QCON and CON)

You can save controller and channel information to a connection file. Quick connection information is stored
in a QCON file and Site connection information is stored in a CON file.

8.3 Legacy WinScope Channels File (SHN)

Legacy WinScope channel files have an SHN extension. These can also be opened in WinScope1000.
Legacy WinScope supported a single connection, with up to 32 channels. Each channel could use a different
controller address, meaning a different controller. Each different controller will be represented by a different
connection in WinScope1000.
Note: Legacy WinScope – version 2.x.y of WinScope with limited fuctionalities

8.4 Scope Data Files (SDT)

WinScope1000 can read and save scoped data in SDT files. The format of these files is compatible with
Legacy WinScope. However, the WinScope1000 project file format saves connection information together
with the scoped data.

8.5 Trends File (TRD)

Trends files can be generated by IV8 and IV12 displays. They may be a single file or a series of files. These
can be opened and charted in WinScope1000. They cannot be created by WinScope1000.
