Production of Sound

Sound is produced by vibration. Musical instruments produce sound through vibrating strings, membranes, or air columns. The frequency of vibration determines the pitch, and is measured in Hertz (Hz). Higher frequencies produce sharper sounds. Musical instruments use variations in string/membrane tension, air column length, and string/wire properties to control pitch. Pleasant, rhythmic vibrations are considered musical tones, while irregular vibrations produce noise. Musical therapy uses music to improve physical and mental health conditions.

Production of sound:-

 Sound is a form of energy

 Speedy to and fro movement is known as vibration.
 Sound is generated due to the vibration of an object

Instruments that produce sound:-

 Musical instruments can be categorized according to the part that vibrates
to produce sound
i. Instruments that produce sound by vibrating strings
ii. Instruments that produce sound by vibrating air
iii. Instruments that produce sound by vibrating membranes

Sound can be categorized as,

1. Natural sounds

2. Artificial sounds

Frequency of vibrations: -
 The number of vibrations of an object per unit time is referred to
as the frequency of that object.
 If an object vibrates 50 times a second, then it is said that, the
frequency of that object is 50 Hz.
 Frequency of vibrations is measured by the international (SI) unit
Hertz (Hz).

 By vibrating a tuning fork sound can be generated.

 The frequency differs according to the length of the length
of the arms.
 The longest tuning fork has the minimum frequency.
 Frequency increases gradually with decreasing length.

Musical instruments that produce sound by vibrating membranes: -

 Frequency of the sound generated by vibrating membranes depend
on Tension of the membrane (tightness)
 The frequency of the sound produced increases when the
membrane is stretched more. Therefore, the sound is sharp
and high when the tightness is increased.

Musical instruments that produce sound by vibrating air columns: -

 Frequency of the sound generated by vibrating membranes depend
on length of the air column.
 The frequency of the sound produced increases when the
length of the air column is decreased.
Musical instruments that produce sound by vibrating strings/rods:-
 Frequency of the sound generated by vibrating membranes depend
on,
 Length of the wire
 Tension of the wire
 Thickness of the wire (mass of a unit length)
 A sharp (high) sound is produced when short, tight, thin wires are vibrated.
 Sound produced by the vibration of long, loose and thick wire is not that
sharp.

Musical tones and noises: -

 Rhythmical sounds which are pleasant to our ears are musical tones.
Such sounds are produced by methodical or formal vibrations of
objects.
 Sounds which are unpleasant to our ears are called noises. They are
produced by non-formal vibrations of objects.

Ancient, traditional and modern musical instruments

 The musical instruments had been used for the services in religious
places in ancient Sri Lanka are ancient instruments.

 The musical instruments used in cultural festivals are traditional

musical instruments.

 The musical instruments mostly computerized and electrical used by

younger generations are modern musical instruments.

Musical therapy: -
The treatment given using music is known as musical therapy.
 Musical therapy can be used as a method of treatment to improve
physical fitness and mental integrity.
 It is discovered that diseases and disorders of brain and nervous
system, heart failures, mental depression can be cured by using this
therapy.
 That range we can hear is known as the limits of hearing.
 The limits of hearing or the range of frequency of sound that human ear
can hear is 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz.
