Grammar: The plural of nouns
There are two kinds of plurals: Plurals with -en and plurals with -s. These categories are not
mutually exclusive, but they often do not overlap.

Plurals on -s
Words ending with:
-el lepel lepels spoon
-em bezem bezems broom
-en jongen jongens boy
-er beker bekers cup
vowels (except a strong e) foto foto’s picture
tante tantes aunt
oma oma’s grandma
baby baby’s baby
diminutives meisje meisjes girl
hekje hekjes fence
balletje balletjes little ball
foreign loan words cadeau cadeaus present
game games game

Exercise 1:
Write the following nouns in the plural form. Also write the article.
0. de tafel (the table) => de tafels
1. de lade (the drawer) => _______
2. het jongetje (the boy) => _______
3. het risico (the risk) => _______
4. de bodem (the bottom) => _______
5. de pony (the pony) => _______
6. de entourage (the entourage) => _______

Plurals on -en
Basically the rest.

Note the spelling rule:


twin vowels + 1 consonant => drop 1 vowel: maan manen (moon)
singular vowel + 1 consonant => add 1 extra consonant: kip kippen (chicken)
ends with an -s, -ls or -rs => change the s to a z huis huizen (house)
bretels bretelzen (suspender)
hars harzen (resin)
ends with an -f, -lf or -rf => change the f to a v fuif fuiven (party)
wolf wolven (wolf)
korf korven (cob)
Exercise 2:
Write the following nouns in the plural form. Also write the article.
0. de muis (the mouse) => de muizen
1. de kat (the cat) => ________
2. het werk (the work) => ________
3. de riem (the belt) => ________
4. de hals (the neck (front part)) => ________
5. de boot (the boat) => ________
6. het raam (the window) => ________

Answers:
1.de katten, 2.de werken, 3.de riemen, 4.de halzen, 5.de boten, 6.de ramen, 7.de scherven

Some plurals are irregular though, where the ending changes or there is no consonant
added. These cases are rare and all of them are -en plurals.
dak daken roof
glas glazen glass
weg wegen road
slot sloten ditch
stad steden city
schip schepen ship
blad bladen / bladeren sheet / leaf
ei eieren egg
kind kinderen child
rund runderen cattle
lied liederen song

Then, words ending with -heid get the ending -heden in the plural:
mogelijkheid mogelijkheden possibility

Lastly, Latin or Greek words get their original plural forms on top of their Dutch forms:
museum musea / museums
catalogus catalogi / catalogussen
