CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Cyberbullying amongst teenagers is a major issue, due to

their increased use of social media. Previous literature
surveys have not covered in detail cyberbullying studies
in 2014 and cyberbullying risk factors. This research
explores cyberbullying research areas, such as the use of
social media by teenagers, themes from cyberbullying
studies carried out since 2012, cyberbullying risk
factors and how teenagers deal with cyberbullying
incidents. The prevalence rate of cyberbullying has
increased significantly in the observed 5-year period,
and it is imperative that researchers from low and middle
income countries focus sufficient attention on
cyberbullying of children and adolescents. Despite a lack
of scientific intervention research on cyberbullying, the
review also identified several promising strategies for
its prevention from the perspectives of youths, parents
and schools. More research on cyberbullying is needed,
especially on the issue of cross-national cyberbullying.
International cooperation, multi-pronged and systematic
approaches are highly encouraged to deal with
cyberbullying.

Recent research studies have shown that a substantial

number of students are victims of cyberbullying, which
leads to a wider realization that cyberbullying is
becoming a serious problem (CitationCross, 2008;
CitationLi, 2006a, Citation2006b; CitationThompson,
Smith, & Goldsmith, 2008; CitationWillard, 2004a). This
finding calls for a thorough understanding of
cyberbullying that requires us to dissect the

relationships among related variables in social,

physical, institutional, and community contexts. This
study, therefore, explores student beliefs and their
behaviors associated with cyberbullying. Patchin and
Hinduja (2006) conducted an online survey involving 384
respondents who were under 18 years of age. Their results
showed that various forms of bullying occurred online,
including being ignored (60.4%), disrespected (50.0%),
called names (29.9%), threatened (21.4%), picked on
(19.8%), made fun of (19.3%), and having rumors spread
about them (18.8%). Despite the relatively large sample
size, some scholars (CitationHoover, Wilkins, Miltenoff,
Downing, & Davis, 2007) cautioned readers not to
overgeneralize this result because this work consisted of
a convenience sample.

There has been lot of history and researches done on

cyberbullying ever since the technology grows out. The
technology become a way to bully a person in different
plat form as most of teenagers are interacting in social
media. They have different social skills interaction
towards on social media. Cyberbullying means the use of
electronic communication to bully a persons typically by
sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature
"children may be reluctant to admit to being the victims
of cyber bullying " by Oxford Dictionary. This
cyberbullying old popular way to bully on social media
that is impacting the teenager mostly. Methods of cyber
bullying can be done through online threats and
harassment, sharing and spreading fake news or bad image
posting through or pictures to damage a reputation or
insulting through chat or group chat room. And that are
the usual and popular happening nowadays to some teenager
for instance, what happened last December 2018 where a
viral video online showing bullying of one student of

Ateneo de manila university that took place inside the

rest of the campus. It urges the government to implement
a cyberbullying act not just for the students but to all
individuals of the country.

As cyberbullying is constantly changing due to new

technology and new communication platforms, the way it is
defined is also debated among researchers who study it.
Traditionally, bullying involves a power imbalance
between the victim and the bully. In other words, the
bully is generally physically stronger than the victim.
This may not always be the case in cyberbullying and
being “stronger” is also harder to define, since the
bullying occurs via technology, so the difference in
“strength” is not easy to identify. Even though the
cyberbullying happened online and on social media, still
it gives a bigger impact to the teenagers. It affected
their all aspects of life ,especially their social
skills. It affecting their social skills that can bring
negativity in their life. As most of the teenagers have
phones and present in some social media platforms, they
are open for cyberbullying attack from fellow teenagers.
It gives way as a tool and medium where they can
cyberbully some teenagers. As some social media platforms
have comments and reactions they can directly hit the
teenager they want to bully that are affecting their
social abilities.

Researches want to know if someone is being cyberbullied

and if that person does not tell anyone. They also want
to know for young people to look out for one another and
keep an eye out for any changes in friends’ social
behavior. Some teenagers feeling socially connected does
not always happen through seeing others face-to-face.
Given how popular social media is today, there are

hundreds of ways that teenagers can connect with other

teenagers that could lead in cyberbullying.

cyberbullying on teenagers social
skills.
2. What are the results of the impact
of cyberbullying on teenagers
